My Cherokee Limited with RKE ocassionally will not turn off when in park and button depressed. Dealer said wait a few seconds. Last 2 weeks problem is much more frequent and takes several minutes to finally turn off. Msg is 'Put Vehicle in Park' which is is. Dealer said to pop off the on/off button and use key contained within RKE fob. Button resists prying off, afraid I'll hack it up in process. Any ideas what's going on and how to take button off w/o damage?
Perhaps the "Is the transmission in Park? sensor/wiring is the culprit. This won't fix it, but for added insight - select the option to enable the Parking Brake automatically when the tranny is placed in Park. Does the Parking Brake auto ON or not auto ON consistently with the RKE problem?
Thanks, I didn't realize the ON/OFF button had a real keyhole hidden in there!?!?

The '14s do not have a removable button, nor do they use the key to start the car, even if the fob battery dies. There is some kind of circuit that starts the car when you press the button with the fob.
So do not try to pry the button off. Then, go smack your dealer in the head with a tire iron.
Thanks for that tidbit. Explains why that button cover woundn't budge. Not the first time dealer personnel got confused between the Cherokee KL and the Grand. I agree with Desert Hiker, since it's getting worse, probably a sensor or chafing wire.
