Please place your hands on the steering wheel

I've had fun demonstrating the Lane Sense feature to friends. On the way down to Florida I demonstrated it to my wife on I-75 when there was no traffic around us. Took my hands off the wheel and the Cherokee slowly worked down to the right edge of the lane and the Lane Sense triggered the return to the centre of the lane. Very nice. Kept my hands off and it did it again. This time, however, the EVIC flashed a message: PLEASE PLACE YOUR HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL.

This past week I've had that message THREE times when I had my hands firmly on the wheel.

So, looks like we'll have a number of gremlins to be fixed in a future software upgrade.

I guess you don't have Lane Sense? If it is on and you get close it moves you back in to the centre even with your hands on the wheel (you can out muscle it if you wish). If you have a turn signal on in that direction it goes inactive on this feature.

It is ONLY when you have your hands off the wheel that you are to get this message - and the last three came with my hands on the wheel.

Do I like Lane Sense? YES I DO. I think it is going to prevent accidents.

I do have lane sense in my limited as well. I've played with it and have also shown a number of people the bump steering.

I've never run into the problem of it with that warning with my hands on the wheel.

I have however had it when I allowed the computer to correct my steering three times in a row with lane sense and my hands off the wheel while demonstrating it to others.

I get the warning after the second "no hands correction." I guess it trusts you more than me. :D

A few people I've demo'd it to have been very surprised to see something that technical in the Cherokee.

I do have Lane assist also and there is sensors in the wheel that will tell if there are no hands on the wheel.

from the OM Page 47

NOTE:
When operating conditions have been met, the LaneSense system will monitor if the
driver’s hands are on the steering wheel and provides an audible warning to the driver when the driver’s hands are not detected on the steering wheel. The system will cancel if the driver does not return their hands to the wheel.
