Does anyone know if there is a "timeout" on the power liftgate on the TH? Power function works fine going up, works fine going down if done within a few minutes but after those few minutes the power down does not work, I have to bring it down by hand until it catches and then the power lock fuction works and pulls it into the lock position. My 2014 GC does not seem to time out like this and the power function works regardless of time with gate open. I can not find anyhitng in the book pertainin g to this subject. Love the car! Thanks
Yes, there is a time out in the lift gate. It talks about it in the full manual. I don't think it is in the user's guide that comes with the vehicle. I think it says says it is a safety feature.
That exact same wording is in the Grand Cherokee Owners Manual 7th Edition
If liftgate is left open for an extended period of time,
the liftgate may need to be closed manually to reset
power liftgate functionality.
I've walked off and left it open, ate lunch, had a cuppa, left it open another couple hour to dry interior, came back and hit the button and it closed all by itself after having been open for over 4 hours...
Mine "times out" much sooner than 10-15 mins. i think mine may be saging down some or not always going up all the way to triger the switich. next time it does it I am going to push up a little to see if it triggers the switch. ths.
I have a related problem, I cannot find a way to disable the normal liftgate operation. I installed my Thule Platform-style rack and put on bikes. All works OK except... I'm having is finding a way to avoid denting or scratching the liftgate if the liftgate button is accidentally pressed while bikes are on in the towing position.
For now, my only solution is to remove the liftgate fuse, #F50 in the power distribution center under the hood. That means the liftgate is out-of-commission until fuse is reinserted. but there's got to be a better way.
Hope someone here has had a similar issue and resolved it.
I had a different issue, my liftgate wouldn't close, I jut got 2 beeps at a different pitch, if closed manually It wouldn't latch. Disconnecting the battery for 5 mins reset it to normal. I may try fuse 50 next time, it's easier than disconnecting the battery.
I read somewhere that disconnecting the battery resets the tranny learn feature and it takes around 400 miles to re learn? In that article it said when you need to change the battery, jump it with another during the process to avoid this trans relearn thing
Lately, my liftgate locking mechanism cycles, but does not catch until about the 3rd or 4th try. Tried looking for any objects that might be blocking the liftgate from properly sealing to no avail. Scheduled an appointment at the local Jeep service department. Anyone experience a liftgate lock intermittently not locking?

I had an issue with my lift gate not closing completely. It also wouldn't go up or down at times when I'd press the button on the fob or overhead. They replaced the locking mechanism and that worked for a short period of time. Did the same thing again and it turned out to be one of the struts. Replaced and have not had trouble since.
The dealership service department said they could not replicate the problem of the liftgate not locking. They greased the locking mechanism. They reported that my battery was dead and they recharged it. My battery had performed fine without any problems prior to bringing the Jeep in for service on the malfunctioning latch. I noticed when a service tech used the dashboard button to open then close the liftgate, it did not lock. When the liftgate is closed, but not locked, the interior lights remain on. I suspect when they kept my Jeep overnight with the liftgate unlocked, the interior lights drained the battery. I attributed their erroneous assessment to different techs receiving then working on resolving the liftgate not locking issue.
Few days later, the hatch popped unlock while driving on a smooth stretch of straight road from the grocery store at the posted 45 MPH. Only about 2 miles from my home, so I continued driving home, keeping a watchful eye that my groceries did not fall out the unsecure liftgate.
At home, used a dry clean cloth to thoroughly remove all grease from the liftgate locking mechanism. Next, sprayed a small amount of silicone lubricant on the locking mechanism. To date, the liftgate has been locking and staying locked, reliably without a single fail. However, I've gotten into the habit of waiting for the liftgate to close, then physically verifying it is locked and secure by giving it a quick firm pull before leaving my Jeep unattended.
