I personally have never owned studded tires but from the few people that I know that have had them, they say they are the best.

With you being in NS, I'm guessing you have lots of wet snow and ice conditions. I am thinking that studded would be they way for you to go...

Greetings,

I found about Nokian's years ago on a ski trip in Vermont. I had a conversation with a local resident about which tires were best for the winter conditions and he pointed to his Nokian tires. At that time, they did not have my size for the Pathfinder.

When it came time for me to switch tires on JGC WK2, I asked my co-worker, who is also from Poland for his advise. He said, get them, spend the money and shut up. And the last comment, you will not be sorry. Pulled the trigger and I got mine. As a first time Nokian tire purchaser, I could not be any happier.

In any event, if you have the tire size of 245/65/17 I would call Nokian ask them about you size. They are always updating size to their inventory and sometimes their site does not reflect that. When I call to confirm my size and asked about an opinion, they put be on with somebody that owns that tire. They are very forth right and respect us as consumers.

Hope this helps.

Best for now.

Re: Recommendations for Snow Tires on the TH

I'm on the fence between 3 "snow tires" for my Trailhawk, which I'm advised should be here 'before Christmas'. Based on multiple and varied reviews on the googles, here's a really general 'blurb' on each ...

Blizzak - best for ice AND snow, but really shallow tread - must replace every 20,000kms

Nokian R2 - best for snow, and great on ice, but less so on icy cornering

X-Ice 3 - best for ice and great for snow, but less so on icy cornering

I live in the prairies/Western Canada (Alberta) and our winters are pretty unpredictable at best. From piles of snow, with random 2 or 3 day warm ups of summer like temps, followed by deep freezes leaving ice everywhere.

My daily commuting includes icy freeways - and I am on them earlier than most, so ice melt sprayers or sand spreaders have not been out yet following a rain or snow - so driving at higher speeds on icy roads is what I'm mostly concerned about.

Anyone have any refuting or corroborating experience on these?

Thanks!

This is some fine input, thanks! My problem is this: this year I am in NS, but next year it is very likely that I will end up in SK, so Prairie climate (winters), all the way through.

Given the fact that ice patches underlying heaps of snow are quite prevalent @the Prairies, I would be opting for studded tires.

Keep those opinions coming!

Greetings,

I would give Goodyear a call and see if they can match you to a Wrangler DuraTrac. Based on the sizes for a 17 inch rim, the tread depth is 16/32 and you can get them studded. This might be suited for your forth coming move to SK.

Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac | Goodyear Tires

The size link is at the bottom.

Best for now.

Re: Recommendations for Snow Tires on the TH

No worries with OEM tires, they handle great on icy roads and in snow. These tires also do well in mud (lots of gumbo in the south) which impressed the crap out of me!
