I listened to the video again and not only the Renagade Trailhawk but the other versions of Renagade has the option of Active Drive and Active Drive Low

No, I mean what they are calling it, im sure it has low range but it would be active drive 2 vs 1.

Yeah, that is the confusing part. it would make more sense to be AD 2 for low range version. Maybe a slightly different version than Cherokee? Or a wording thing? I don't know

I watched the video of the Cherokee AD II on their website. Low range doesn't sound like a mechanical change. It describes the system in Sand/Mud mode, low range as evenly balancing the torque between the front and rear and automatically adjusting the throttle and braking systems to optimize torque. It does not highlight any specific component of the AD II powertrain. I am not sure what makes it "low".

The original post described the need for a neutral mode for towing. That is one of the big points here. Whatever Jeep calls it... it needs to have a lot of functionality

the low range is all in the transfer case, low is a gear range that is geared very low for slow speed crawling. it is something like 8.01:1 as an example

Not quite, it is in the ptu and the rdm, since the ring gear drives the pinion gear (opposite of the way it usually works) in the ptu it has to go through a 8.01:1 gear reduction in the rdm so the total gear reduction of the two is somewhere around 3:1.

That all depends on the t-case they go with, but your probably right on this one.

The ptu is matched up with the rdm, the one speed ptu goes with the one speed rdm, the two sped ptu goes with the two speed rdm.

Then it sounds like they went with a non traditional 4x4 setup.

Im talking about the cherokee, but since they went with the 9 speed trans in the renegade as well im assuming they are using the same technology.

I would assume that the technology is basically the same like you say since it is using the 9 speed trans

Re: Renegade

I'm following your conversation. Interesting. Wanted to know what a rdm is and found this fairly recent patent while looking it up:

Patent WO2013188647A1 - Disconnectable driveline with a multi-speed rdm and ptu - Google Patents

Any possible relevance?
