RO1 Recall

RO1 recall came out yesterday and I received an email yesterday morning from Chrysler customer service to make an appointment. This has to do with reprogramming the TCM and PCM. Dealer was surprised I had received an email. My Cherokee has been running just great with no shifting problems, only 6200 miles. This is supposed to address durability. We will see as this will be done Wednesday. They said they will give me a loaner as this should take most of the day.

Thanks to this site I was able to discuss this work with a certain amount of knowledge, letting the dealer know he is dealing with an aware customer.

Had mine done last Thursday, took just over an hour while I waited. The dealer billing rate for this Campaign is 1 1/2 hours, all day seems excessive. But you get a loaner, sort of moot for how long they have your auto.

Showed immediate improvement in my 1-2 & 2-3 shifts, should get even better with adaptive time.

RO1 is giving the dealer 4 hours to perform and bill. Are we talking about the same work?

I was looking at page 15 of RO1 and adding the times together. Thanks for the clarification. I'll probably wait on my vehicle instead of taking the loaner.

Why the differences in time? I was adding the time together from page 15 too.
I don't see how they can do the flash and the relearn procedure in 1.5 hours

Just an added note; while my Cherokee was being serviced I looked at the floor models; $51K Sahara Wrangler Unlimited with dealer lift, $61K Chrysler 300 and $73K Grand Cherokee SRT. I sure do like my loaded Limited. :D

Im getting use to the hp lose from my srt8 jeeps and it seems to be getting a tad faster with 10,000 miles on it and ill find out in a couple weeks. The way the prices are going on the srt8s i would have to get the charger as it would be 18/20,000 cheaper. If they ever F/I the V6 on the cherokee i would think about that.

I think the amount of time is dependent on the particular level of software on the Cherokee. There is also mention of over 50 miles. There is also a mention of the drive and relearn.
There is a section for the infamous drive and program relearn that requires 2 techs.
If drive and relearn has to be employed then the required time will go up a lot.
The way it looks most will fall under the drive and relearn.
It also looks like this is a total delete of the existing software and install of the new which will wipe out all the AL data from your driving.
For me that is real bad because I have not had any updates and my shifting/operation is perfect. My AL finished perfect.
The issue that makes me real, real nervous is the term "to help prevent potential durability issues".

My concern is if the dealer takes a shortcut and does not do the drive and relearn simply because they do not fully understand these detailed instructions.
So I am glad to see this discussion and the notice as now I can have an intelligent discussion with them on this subject and exactly what they plan on doing if anything.
With a 12/11/13 build it looks like I fall under it.

In talking with the service manager, at my dealer, he said this isn't that much different from what they have had to do with the 2014's, last year.

I have the same concerns about losing how well mine is shifting, very seamless and smooth. Those engineers know a whole lot more than I do, just as long as the bean counters don't try to cut corners.

Had RO1 performed today, took 2 hours. Included the Drive and learn. Dealer told me that it would take a couple of days of driving to learn my particular driving habits so expect some shift differences. Time will tell.

Can anyone confirm this applies to Trailhawks, as my Canadian dealer is saying my VIN not showing this service required. I ordered it in Jan 2014 and received in May 2014 so I know it falls within the build dates, why would the Trailhawks not get this reflash on the 9spd?

Pat.

I have a (US delivered) TrailHawk, build date Jan 2014, and the VIN shows two recall - for the tranny and the airbag sensor software updates.

Yes i have the full print out of the R01 details, the problem is I read that as my vehicle should get this reflash, but a VIN check on Jeep.ca only shows some BCM reflash at this time. I have the 3.2 and the only transmission is the 9 speeed auto, might there be a code other than DFH or DFJ for the Trailhawk,

Thanks,

Pat

I read it the same way you do.

2014-2015 (KL) Jeep Cherokee...That means all Cherokee models.

The DHF and DHJ are the sales codes for the transmissions, AD1 and AD2.

So, if it is built between the dates stated on the recall, it applies to your vehicle.
I don't know if you have the option, but if you do, go to another dealer.

Yes and on top of that the RO1 is a complicated install.
All software has to be installed in a particular order.
If not they list one possibility: the vehicle will not even function to get out of the service bay.
What I believe they are addressing is poor/rough shifting. Even minor shifting issues can cause wear on this transmission, thus "Durability" issues.
I agree I will leave mine alone till my dealer says to do it. As of now RO1 is not showing up under my VIN. With a 12/11/13 build its running perfect with no updates. With a 5/50 and a Max Care Life I am covered!
Its running great and I want to keep it that way.

^^^Your covered by the basic 5 year/100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty.^^^

Had RO1 performed on Feb.25th. I have just finished a 2500 mile trip and the transmission is shifting just the way it was before RO1 was performed, flawlessly and smooth. Still getting 26-27 MPG.

I see several people had RO1 on this board and say that the car still shifts the same as before. That has not at all been my experience. Before the recall I loved my V6 2015 Trailhawk. I put 11,500 miles on it to florida, several fishing trips to the NC mountains and I live at the beach so I'm off road a lot.
Since RO1, I cannot stand to drive this vehicle. It is always in too high a gear and after 4 trips to the dealer and two dealer "relearnings" there has been absolutely no improvement. I now have over 3000 miles on the car since RO1 and feel lucky to be alive. I won't take it back to the mountains until it is restored to what I purchased.
It took me 4 trips to the dealer for them to level with me that RO1 prevents a 3-2 downshift so how can people claim the car drives as before? When I go around a corner even at 2mph, my car remains in third gear. The only way to get going again is to floor it which redlines the engine before it shifts all the way to first with a long delay.
Also since RO1, my 4WD goes out every time I am on the beach and the tranny temp is running up to 208 degrees on a 77 degree day. Once the 4WD goes out, I lose cruise control until the next day.
The local dealer here has been useless as has Customerassist. They both keep referring back to each other like neither has a clue.

Jeep Owner Connect finally showed that my 2015 TH needed the RO1 Recall about a week ago. Prior to this the transmission had been shifting very well; no rough shifts up or down and none of those "wobble" issues or high temperatures either. This after about 1550 miles on the odometer. So, I took the TH in to L & L Motors yesterday here in Roosevelt, Utah for the Recall. It involves flashing both the Trans Control Module and the Power Control Module as well as a transmission re-learn drive with two techs aboard. They had it all day and delivered it back to my home about 4:30PM. There were 18 additional miles on the odometer so I know they did the re-learn drive. I took it out for a test drive this AM and put around 12 miles on it on country roads. I really can not see much difference in before and after driving. Trans shifts up and down about the same as before, which is good news for me as I was quite happy with it before.

So far, so good!

So New tranny solved problem but even after almost 400 miles it still shifts like a bag of rocks sometimes so not entirely sure that this jeep will be right as rain so to speak lol Happy that I have a trail hawk in transit and will be getting rid of this built on friday lemon.

Maybe this is just my experience, but mine is having a 'clunk shift' issue and MIL light since the R01 update last month. This is the second trans in this car as the first failed in early July after a May TCM update. I'm beginning to question FCA's programming expertise in developing shift maps for this 9-speed. Anyway, it's going in next Wed and the dealership will keep it for a couple of days to determine what's up with it. I'm thinking trans #3 is not out of the realm of possibility.

I've just finished opening 3.5 months of mail. Have both R01 and R05.

Anyone find hat 9th is engaged earlier? I sure hope so. In our Windsor Star today there is a review of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE that has the same transmission. On of the reviewer's comments was interesting:

"The transmission is one of the more accomplished nine-speed boxes, as there's much less hunting for the right gear and it actually gets into ninth (the Jeep version of this transmission hardly ever seems to find top gear)."

I had disconnected the battery when we returned to FLA in January. Sure behaved strangely when I reconnected it. For the past two days the USB drive would not connect. It has 6600 tunes and I was really PO'd since the SD slot stopped working just after we took delivery. Today I disconnected the battery again and left it for a couple of hours. Reconnected but no luck with the USB working. Took it out for a drive because everything seems to need to be reset and suddenly it started working. That was a relief because it is my wife's car and I didn't renew her SeriusXM subscription since it would be sitting unused. She was not too happy when the USB would not work.

I have to say that after not driving the Cherokee for so long it was nice to get into it again. I had a 2012 T&C and last June swapped it for a 2014 T&C that was virtually identical except no power 3rd row - which we rarely use. That was a mistake. I've never before had the same vehicle twice in a row. I should have bought a Durango Citadel with a Hemi. Too late now since our buck has tanked and the price is out of sight with respect to value. One thing for sure - I will not get the new T&C next year. After our current experience with a new model I'll wait a couple of years before even thinking about it and let the bugs get sorted out.

Well, trans #3 happened. Apparently RO1 killed the C-clutch snap ring and FCA authorized another replacement. The new tranny seems to be the best of the three that we've had so far. I'm not holding my breath, however.

#3?

Hope they installed quick disconnects on yours so the next time they just release several latches and the tranny pops out.
:)

Just took our 2015 Trailhawk in for this recall. We waited for 3 hours for them to finish it, but the service manager came in and told us they were having issues getting the TCM part to work properly. He explained that if they couldn't get it working right, they would have to get us a rental and replace the tranny. Well, after another hour of waiting, it looks like we'll be getting a new tranny in ours. We drove home in a rental . The worst part it that they gave us a Dodge Avenger with over 43,000 miles on it and needing the oil changed . Guess they don't want to push selling any of those POS's to much. We'll wait for the dealer call to come pick up the Trailhawk and see what happens. The TH only had 4950 miles on it when we dropped it off. Let's see how much they test it.

The dealership REEEEEALY doesn't like to do replacements on the KL. I think the main issue is FCA doesn't give them enough time to properly do the relearn. Some dealers are situated where that procedure is within the flat-rate, where others end up losing money if they do it properly.
In any case, after my wife (the primary driver) and I discussed continuing with this torture, we decided it was time to Lemon Law the KL. Too many strikes against it to continue. Our problem is that the majority of our driving is rural mountain highway with no cell service....no way to call for help. The first tranny died in one of our 'no-call' zones and the wife had to sit along the road for about an hour letting the trans cool down enough to try to get home. The second trans died after the infamous RO1.
We really liked the car....no issues other than the trans., but it's time to say goodby, sadly.
