Roof rack tie down

With a kayak on my roof rack I strap around the crossbars and tie down the bow to the front of the vehicle and the stern to the rear of the vehicle. I don't think the stern will be a problem as I'll likely tie down to the hitch receiver or ball mount. However, I don't see anything on the front end of the Latitude that is sturdy enough to tie down to. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Re: Roof rack tie down

I was thinking about that problem when deciding how to carry my wife's kayak on our new Limited. I was wondering whether to fit to the hood the same 'loop' that's fitted to the Wrangler hood. That came in very handy when we carried the kayak on that.

I'm not familiar with the "loop" you're referring to on the Wrangler. Could you elaborate on this please?

If it is attached to the hood I'd be a bit concerned as the hood is one of the structures that doesn't seem sturdy enough for attaching anything to that will be exerting an upward force.

Re: Roof rack tie down

Attachment 38906

This the 'loop' I was referring to. I understand it is there in connection with the fold down windscreen.

It worked as a good tie down for my wife's kayak for nearly 3,000 miles with no detrimental effect on the hood. The front and back ropes are more for yaw stability than tie down which is done on the saddles.

I think with a sufficiently robust backing plate under the hood (which looks to be made from aluminum) that loop should do the trick.
