Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

My wife's KL is doing exactly the same thing. 3 trips to the dealer has got us the new antenna, with no improvement. We have a cabin in upstate NY that we visit every other weekend. We travel the exact same route for the last 10 years and in her last vehicle (a 2011 WK) it never dropped a single note of the song. My last vehicle was a 2010 Ram pickup, same thing, never missed a single word to the song. I just traded the pickup in on a new Willys Wheeler edition Wrangler with the optional 430 touch screen radio and it hiccuped a note or two on the trip up this weekend, but each event lasted a split second. The KL has the 8.4a touchscreen radio and it will drop out for a couple miles with the screen saying " acquiring signal" the entire time. I can't tell you how agravating it is to stand in a dealership and tell them what it's doing and having them tell you that is what satellite radio does. Well then tell me why it doesn't do it in the last 3 or 4 vehicles I've owned? My guess is somewhere in the future the 8.4 radio is going to get the reputation as the Ford Pinto of Jeep radios.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

Thanks to everyone who has posted to this thread. It looks like this may be more than just a isolated issue. If you are having a issue with SXM dropping out and have not posted please give us your input. I am going to push this issue for all of us as far as I can with Jeep while remaining respectful and polite. We all paid good money for this feature and if it is not performing correctly Jeep needs to fix it promptly for us, not just for future owners. One important point...is this just a problem with the 8.4A systems or are owners with the 8.4AN radio having the same problem?

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

logcabin, I have say I think you are experiencing being moved to the XM satellites from Sirius - and thus don't get the advantage of the third one that does a figure 8 in the northern hemisphere.

I have to say I can't figure out why they are moving Jeep/Chryslers to the XM side of things - unless SiriusXM is going to be foolish enough to eventually close down the original Sirius system. Obviously they don't want to keep two systems going because of the cost. Of course, they could also have decided to keep the "cheaper" system.

"Sirius implemented a series of terrestrial ground repeaters where satellite signal would otherwise be blocked by large structures including natural structures and high-rise buildings." I'm sure XM did this as well and that is why in large cities you usually don't lose the signal. I'm surprised users in Denver and other cities are having problems. Perhaps XM didn't do it the same way and install as many.

Apologies - two part reply - started, got the call for dinner, and then watched the news and returned to it over an hour and a half later.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

Granddriver, I have my doubts about the satellite switch thing, my new Wrangler is a 2014 and like I said, it hiccuped a split second or two. Where my wifes KL you can drive a couple miles with "aquiring signal" on the screen. Same spots everytime. You would think the Wrangler would be affected the same way in the same spots.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

There is one block in Bradenton FL where both system disappear for a couple of seconds. Having said that, our Sirius units (4 of them) have been head and shoulders over our two former XM units (other than in that one block where they both crap). Going north from FLA to Canada in our motorhome, as I pointed out earlier, it was terrible with the XM portable whereas we had no problems whatsoever with the Sirius portable. That says a lot to me with respect to the availability of the signals from each. We currently have the T&C on Sirius and the Cherokee on XM (didn't know it was XM until I phoned and found they are on different systems). This summer when negotiations start I want our portable on Sirius and NOT XM since it will be used in our motorhome (we've had our vehicles on Sirius and XM in the US and Canada - depending on the deal available at the time - but they both use the same systems as their US counterparts). Since we spend just short of 6 months in the US we feel that is not unreasonable since when it comes to hours used the time in the US wins by a landslide.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

I'm headed back to the dealer tomorrow to have the antenna replaced. Not confident this will fix the reception problem but I hope to be surprised. I will post results tomorrow.

Keep us posted, I don't want to sound like I'm bashing my wife's Cherokee. I love the way it drives. Nicer than many of the cars we have owned, but the sirius reception is just aweful!!

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

Chapter 4. I went to the dealer expecting they were going to replace the antenna because that's what I was told by jeep customer service. What they really did was review the TSB for this problem, verify that the signal was dropping and then agree that they needed to replace the antenna. I was told the part was on rush delivery (whatever that means) but it did not come in today (Thursday). Maybe tomorrow. I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill...I just want the sirius system in the KL to work properly like it did in my Jeep Compass. Chapter 5 coming soon. I asked this question before but I did not see any replies...is this just a 8.4A radio problem or are owners with 8.4 AN radios having this issue? If they are not this might help us as a group to have our 8.4A systems replaced.

Thanks

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

Dear Wife's is the AN. No problems. I asked her if it ever faded or disappeared when she was out alone and she said NO.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

I have the 8.4A and occasionally have brief drops. Might last as much as 5-10 seconds at times. Have only had the acquiring signal screen maybe 2-3 times though. Usually just no sound. Doesn't seem to be any reason for many of them as I am in the wide open.

Re: Sirius Signal Dropping Out

I really need to take mine in for this. I had it happen out in eastern New Mexico where there is not so much as a power line within 20 miles of me. It has happened occasionally since I go it. Cut out is no more than a second or two.

Most of the time it is under bridges but there are times when I have been in the open with no obstructions.
