So whats the deal with the spare tire?

I looked at a Latitude yesterday. Under the rear deck is a space for a spare tire. In that space is . . . an air pump. Seriously?
It looks like there is an almost-$200 option for a compact spare. As-is, it looks like all you could do is pump up a low tire after a slow leak.
Is there any sort of sealant in the trunk?
Does the Cherokee have run-flats?

The issue with the spare tire has made quite a few people on the forums to ask WTF?!?

If you get the 4x4 option a compact spare tire comes with it.

If you get the Tow Package, a full-sized spare tire comes with it.

The pump assembly also includes sealant. Once you use it the sealant container can be replaced. The owners manual you can download from Jeep.com has details in it.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

I just ordered a Latitude, and the dealer told me that the compact spare is a $195 option.

I found a FWD Latitude in-transit to a different dealer and sure enough, the system had allowed that dealer to put a $195 compact spare in the options list.

I looked again at the Jeep website. For the FWD models, it shows the compact spare to be an available option for Sport and Limited, but a standard feature for the Latitude. Not just once, but in two separate places.

I emailed Jeep 4 days ago. Got an acknowledgement of receipt but no response yet.

I called Jeep today, and they tell me that it IS a standard feature for FWD Latitude.

Which story are y'all getting? Which one is correct?

LOL, here we go again. Long story story short the Jeep website is correct. I just picked up my Cherokee Limited, 6 cylinder, Active Drive II yesterday and I have a spare tire. On the FWD cars Chrysler is cutting every corner in the book to keep their prices down. Again, Jeep should have called FWD Cherokees Dodges as the Jeep people really don't know what to do with a FWD car.

Let me give you a tip about the Jeep call center. You are talking with $8 an hour employees who read from a computer screen. If they can't find it on the computer screen they have been known to make stuff up. Every once in a while you really do hit one that knows what they are talking about but your chances of doing that are about the same as winning the lottery.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

Latitude buyers who have taken delivery - Jeep website says standard features include a compact spare - did Jeep provide one for you as standard equipment?

Macfan - thanks for feedback about your Limited . . . but my question is about Latitude.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

Yesterday I picked up my Latitude 4x4 with active drive II and no spare or tire sealant kit. What am I supposed to have? I'm confused. Today I emailed Jeep and called my dealer but no replies as of yet.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

Heard back from the Jeep Customer Assistance Center. They said my Latitude 4x4 should come with the Tire Fit Kit and to contact my dealer about the missing item.

This ^^^

Sport FWD = Tire Service Kit( Compact Spare = $195 )
Sport 4WD = Compact Spare
Latitude FWD = Tire Service Kit( Compact Spare = $195 )
Latitude 4WD = Compact Spare
Limited FWD = Tire Service Kit( Compact Spare = $195 )
Limited 4WD = Compact Spare
Trailhawk = Full Sized Spare

As said, adding the Tow Package to a Sport, Latitude, or Limited model adds a Full Sized Spare.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

Guess what guys. I found my spare and jack. Under the rear storage compartment in my Latitude 4x4 is the spare tire and jack. Duh, I didn't think there was anything under that. Sorry for giving the wrong information....Don.

Re: So whats the deal with the spare tire?

My 2014 Cherokee Limited has a compact spare tire but it was a $195 option. Hard to believe they did not make it a standard for that model. Had I ordered to vehicle from scratch I would have certainly opted for it. Just makes me feel better to know I have a spare in the rear. My 2011 Porsche Spyder does not have a spare and I worry about it every time I go on a long drive. I do have roadside service on the Porsche but I hate having vehicles towed. For a measly $1000 I can get a compact spare for the Spyder. Not planning to do that anytime soon. Also not a fan of the run flat tires. They have awful ride qualities.
