Software Update For Tail Gate

Went in for my 5,000 mile oil change and found out there is a software update for all Cherokee's without the automatic tail gate feature. My biggest disappointment with my Cherokee Limited was you could not open the tail gate door without unlocking the vehicle first. This software update corrects that issue and allows you to unlock and open the tail gate by using the tail gate handle. It was especially annoying not to be able to do this with a bunch of groceries in your hands. It seem odd to me that Jeep would design a car that required you to use the key fob or the doors handle before you could open the rear tail gate door. It now works they way it should have coming from the Factory. I suggest that any of you who have this same issue contact your dealer and get the updated software downloaded.

Re: Software Update For Tail Gate

I'm confused. Why would anyone want to have a tailgate that can be opened without the use of a key. OR, are you saying that you have the proximity system and it should permit you to open the tailgate when you are close to it? I sure can't agree with the first (means a never locked tailgate) and can understand the second.

Yes. I have keyless entry and could not open the tail gate without first opening the vehicle. With the new software as long as the key is in the proximity of the lift gate the lift gate handle will unlock the vehicle and open. This was not the case before the new software was installed. Hope I have made it clear.

Re: Software Update For Tail Gate

We recently returned home in our Cherokee Ltd but returned to FLA in our Town & Country (not enough room in the Cherokee for "her" stuff).

So I can't run out and check. I'm not sure if we ever tried to open it "manually" because we usually hit the remote open button on the key fob. What I did notice was that when you open it like that and then close it, the four side doors remain looked. I liked that. It will be about 40 days until I can check to see if it opens manually when I'm starring right behind with the fob in my hand. I was disappointed that they had left out the "foot wave under the vehicle" as a friend with a 2013 Lexus has that feature as has the 2014 Escape. Maybe they are saving it to have something to include in the 2015.

Same thing on our 2012 Grand Cherokee. Gotta unlock the doors to be able to open the hatch. I grumbled about it just a few days ago. At the grocery store.

Are you sure about that? My 2011 GC had a button on the rear hatch that you pushed and it unlocked it if you had the fob on you. My 2014 works the same way except that the unlock button is in the latch handle. Check your 2012 GC an see if you have that little chrome button. Also, pushing that button unlocked all the doors. Al

You're absolutely right. LOL! I was thinking about the OP saying he wanted to open the hatch by pulling on the handle.

That's how often I use the Jeep. I forgot about that darn button. Hey. It's the wife's ride.

Looks like new KLs have the update - received mine (built 2/10) last friday and the tail gate door opens without first having to unlock the doors.
