Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

Hi,

I just got a new Trailhawk and love it all but the sound. They didn't have the upgraded sound system & speakers in the Jeep I wanted so settled for what came with it. I have a couple questions about this system. My radio is a RA3 and seems like I have non upgrade speakers which I don't like. I also don't know if my radio, the RA3 is tied to the amp power. By that I don't know if this RA3 is the best you can get or that the premium sound option which I didn't get is a different radio/amp. I do know the premium sound option has a nine speaker system but does that system also have an upgraded amp? Ok thats one question. The other is whats the max size speaker depth for the door speakers? I know they are 6x9 but whats the max depth that will fit. I called the dealer who told me based on my VIN that I have the RA3 but could not give me any specs on the speaker depth nor who makes the amp or it's output specs. I don't want to invest in speakers that cannot be benefited with the amp I have.
Thanks,
gator

Re: Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

I have the six speaker system as well, and I can tell you the factory speakers are JUNK. Even the upgraded speakers with the 9 speaker system are not high quality.
I swapped the door speakers out for JBL GT7-96 and it made a HUGE improvement in the sound quality, volume, and bass response. The mounting depth on those are 3", they were a little snug, but no clearance issues at all. Make sue you buy the proper metra adaptors so you don't have to cut the factory wires.
Simply upgrading the speakers is a cost effective means of improving the stock system.

Thanks, from what you've said that 3" was snug is telling me that 3 1/2" would not work. A friend gave me a new pair of 6x9's MTX tri axial. Oh well.
Did you replace all the door speakers or just front and are the rear 6x9's also?
How did you figure out how to remove the door panels? Any hints or concealed fasteners?
Thanks-Gator

Re: Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

I replaced all four 6x9 door speakers. I've had the panel off and on a few times, pretty simple.

If the JBL GT7-96, than the newer JBL GX963 6"x9" is slightly shallower at 2 15/16 and should also work, with 1/16" more room.

Re: Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

I have been trying to find this out all day long. I have the 8.4A Connect infotainment system in a 2016 Trailhawk. I am looking at swapping out the front 3.5 speakers with JL audio for better treble and mid range and then going with JBL 6 x 9 in the front and back doors. I need to find out the metra audio number but I have heard that some may need crutchfield.

I was at a local stern shop where the guys all drive Jeeps, they sell just JL audio, and they all sound so much better than the tinny 6 speaker system. It is sad that with a nice head unit like this the best equalizer is treble bass and midrange. plus location with left/right, and fade.

Still I know the stock speakers are just junk. I miss my upgraded stereo from my 2011 WK2 and my long gone 2011 Buick Regal Turbo from Harman Kardon.
It had great center channels and didn't need a subwoofer. The WK2 had it in, but I had heard the KL system from alpine was pretty basic alpine stuff that wasn't representative of the Alpine name, much like some Bose systems in other brand vehicles.

Just finding the exact information about what is compatible with the 2016 TH was a nightmare. Why isn't this stuff widely available?

Just ordered from Crutchfield audio. The JL are coming via Amazon. Finding the adaptor was easiest through Crutchfield audio but Amazon had better prices in JL and the JBL. So the Rockford Fosgate and adapters from CA and the others from Amazon. The Cal-Hawk tool kit for interior and for paneling too at around $19 with Prime.

Will post when items begin showing up. I will need some warmer days to actually attempt installation.

Re: Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

These are stick pictures of the JBL that will go in the front door. I guess I did buy them from Crutchfield too.

Then these are two way for the rear doors. I will install them all first then see if there is a need for amplifying the rear speakers. I have seen that the rear doors sound less loud even with the same speakers in the front doors, maybe due to less juice getting back there from the head unit.
These are Rockford Fosgate 6x9. Again stick picture.

Re: Speaker upgrade/Sound system specs

The front and rear door, JL Audio and Rockford Fosgage are 2way speakers. The front are mid and tweeter and the rear are more woofer with a tweeter. All the speakers have less than 2 ohm resistance. I bought the JBL 3-way for the front doors because you have most of your range just in that speaker and its depth was 2 15/16" so a bit of wiggle room. With the door getting good power this should workout really nicely. It also had less than 2 ohm resistance but I wanted to have great range up where I'm at. With the dash JL 2 ways you have to worry about blowing them but because both JL audio and RF worked with Uconnect, their speakers work very well in the systems so a bass blocker shouldn't be necessary.

My other option was to go all JL or RF and the JL would be pricy. I didn't find any 3.5 RF speakers I really liked as much as JL. I'm hoping the RF in back can put out enough base to avoid needing a subwoofer. Even in I have to put in a small rear amp just for that set of speakers.

Listening to the JL options locally, was very educational. My Grand Cherokee that I traded in had the 9 speaker system but the sub was pretty worthless mounted in the back. Having a cube works but then you eat up that small bit of cargo space, plus I have a dog back there at times and he hates the sub, so I would have to pull the faded forward much of the time. I didn't bother changing out those speakers, because the Kicker stuff from Mopar weren't much better than stock and I didn't want to sink over a grand into speakers for one of the old RER systems that had the extra 300 watts built into the head unit. Yet I had Nav and Satelitte which made it difficult to pull the whole system.

If what I have doesn't sound best, I can always go back to all JL audio. I wish I had the patience and felt okay putting in component speakers, but that gets very expensive quickly and the Uconnect 8.4A system isn't the easiest to work with. It actually makes fitting 3rd party gear much more difficult.
