Stop/Start

I've got over 10,000 miles on my Limited without and issues. Was wondering what others think of the stop/start. I'm in favor of it and love the feature.

I purposely special ordered a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2L ADII just to not have to deal with stop/start. First of all I could give two hoots about gas mileage and secondly I am not convinced it saves gas but am convinced it puts wear on the engine and limits performance. Yes, I know you can turn the stop/start garbage off but who wants to do that every time you get in your Jeep? So my vote is against it.

Re: Stop/Start

Over 5000 miles on our KL, so far I have not disabled it.
Got used to it and haven't experienced any down side to my expected performance, but then I am getting older and the KL is only my daily driver.

Re: Stop/Start

5,000km for me and I love it! It works a treat and now I don't really think about it.

There are occasions when I don't want to use it, but a simple press of a button organises that for me

Simple and smart

Re: Stop/Start

I like it. I control when it shuts down the engine by using the brake pedal, so it's a nice option to have, especially at those long traffic light intersections.

Re: Stop/Start

The only issue is the Bosch starter was only designed for 3x normal life, per the Bosch web site. With stop/start active, the starter kicks on at every stop sign and intersection, so a run to the hardware store is good for 10 cycles. I think 3x life is not enough and I expect the starter will not last 10 years as expected. So we turn off S/S every time.

Only if the operator doesn't know how to control ESS. I only allow it to stop when I want it to.

I got the Mopar unlimited warranty for the electronics. A new starter will be a side benefit.

Re: Stop/Start

I thought I liked it in the first few months but... Nah. I don't like it and I turn it off every driving cycle. Make no mistake, there is nothing wrong with its operation - it's just not for me. I like to hear my engine running. It's as simple as that.

Stop/start was not an available feature in 2014. So I don't know what you mean that you special ordered yours in 2014 not to have it. I ordered a 2015 with every option and I like the stop/start feature. If you become familiar with the feature, you can feather the brake so that the vehicle will not turn off when you come to a stop. I'm sure that this feature saves fuel as Jeep and other manufacturers have invested a lot of money in offering this to the public.

Please read what I wrote again more slowly and you will see I ordered a 2014 so I wouldn't have to deal with the stop/start on the 2015. The reason I special ordered it had nothing to do with stop/start but had to do with that I wanted it built my way. I intend to keep my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited 10 to 15 years. I did keep my 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS for 15 years and the college kid I sold it to is still driving it. I did buy a 2014 to avoid stop/start but I could have bought one off of the lot if that is all I wanted to do.

Oh, and by the way, I couldn't care less about gas mileage as I drive less than 5,000 miles a year and only buy one tank of gas a month. So if gas goes up or down 20 a gallon it doesn't really effect me. I care much more about performance and longevity than I do gas mileage.

Re: Stop/Start

I'm rather looking forward (or not) to us chatting in five or ten years (probably starting soon after the warranties begin to expire) to see how well this feature works on slightly aging engines/starters/batteries/etc.

I'm cynical at the best of times, but I'm rather predicting that as our vehicles get older, the screaming will increase in intensity demanding a software update to allow us to permanently disable this feature as more of us get stuck in traffic with Stop/No-Start engines.

I'm getting used to it myself, and so far I'm showing a clear benefit in my average gas mileage over my '09 Forester (with the 4-banger), but I have this lingering doubt that there's another shoe waiting to drop ... eventually.

Brad.

Re: Stop/Start

I don't care if the Starter Motor on my KL will last 10+ years or not. I've never owned a car for more than 5 years.

I'll probably trade-in my KL for the next generation Grand Cherokee in 2017, or 2018 (whatever year that it is released), and I hope that the next gen Grand Cherokee has the Stop/Start technology too.
