Superior Off Road Vehicles?

To those Internet posters
...that have or know of superior off road vehicles, please post when you reach Columbia after crossing the Darian Gap so your wisdom can be acknowledged along with your eye for what should be proper automotive design.

Or as the fellow at the Jeep garage with the raised Wrangler and 30"tires asked me when I picked up my new Cherokee, "where do you go off roading around here? "- like shouldn't a person with a vehicle like that be telling me?

I have never, and never will, make the Darian Gap, but I have at least gone from Puerto Ordaz VZ to the head waters of the Orinoco on the Brazilian border with much less than the 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk, so maybe somebody that has, can advise me of a superior off road vehicle.

Re: Superior Off Road Vehicles?

In my experience, both "superior" and "off road" are relative terms that carry widely varied connotations among folks. Given the gnarly routes that I and many others have successfully negotiated in vehicles of many years gone by, my guess is that the true mark of a superior off road vehicle is most often demonstrated by the hands on the steering wheel.

But, my GC at nothing to sneeze at.

Re: Superior Off Road Vehicles?

My question is why does it matter if you off road or you don't? I don't get the mentality that if you own a Jeep( or any 4WD )that you MUST off road it or you are committing a sin. I use 4WD for valid reasons that have nothing to do with off roading. If I like the way a Jeep looks and/or it fits my needs best and want to own one, and I don't off road, I shouldn't catch flak for it.

People are nuts. They worry far too much about what others are doing and far too little about just handling their own affairs these days.

You are an outcast in today's society. Don't you know that before you do anything you must go on the internet and ask a bunch of strangers what they think about it.

I'll bet that you had the audacity to pick the color of your own Jeep, based on your own preference.

Is this a rhetorical question?

Ha.

Actually I wound up taking the Patriot I have because it had what I wanted option/feature wise and was the best overall deal. It was not the color I wanted. I ended up with a white one but I wanted Blackberry Pearl.

I do get your point however.

Re: Superior Off Road Vehicles?

Get what you want.

Off roaders get into "D__K sizing" comparisons all the time. The way to buy a 4x4 is to look at what you intend to do with the system, look at the available vehicles that do that, pick the one you like best... and then opt for the bigger one!

Re: Superior Off Road Vehicles?

My dream trip is to drive the Pan American Highway from end to end. Probably will never happen. But...

If I were to do that drive, I would rebuild a older Land Rover Defender with a GM 350 conversion. Primarily as parts for GM 350s are easy to find all across the Americas. Though my concern is less with the vehicle and swamps than becoming ransom in the Darien Gap. It would suck because I ain't worth diddly.

Yeah they'd pay for my family to take me back!
