Took the leap

Picked up my new Cherokee last night.

I really wanted to wait until they were out longer to make sure there weren't major issues and also so I could get exactly what I wanted( special order - NOTHING locally within 100 miles like I wanted ). I got too good a deal to pass up though( on trade and the Cherokee )so I grabbed it. Was a little more than I wanted to pay( many will remember me complaining Chrysler was pricing them too high )but the vehicle is so much nicer than I expected that I decided it was worth the extra money.

Couldn't get exactly what I wanted as I said earlier. I wanted the following...

Latitude
8.4A
Tow
Cold Weather Group
Premium Sound( Alpine Speakers )

For colors I was good with...

True Blue Pearl
Granite Crystal
Cashmere

For the interior I really only wanted Morocco Black.

I don't think the vehicle above is unique or optioned oddly but good luck finding one like that within 100 miles of here because I looked! Even with a V6 I couldn't find one. I found ONE dealer that had what I wanted( except no Premium Sound ). It was black as well but that wasn't a deal killer. It is a dealer I will not buy from though and the local dealer I use won't either so I couldn't even have them get it for me. Even when I came somewhat close option wise the color killed the deal. Someone needs to teach these local dealers that it is ok to order vehicles in colors besides black, silver, and white( and while they are at it that not everyone wants that $1995 Comfort & Convenience package ).

So, I had to compromise what I wanted or miss out on the offer from my dealer and special offer from my bank. It was now or never so to speak so ordering one was out of the question. Despite have 42 Cherokees on the lot I only found one I was interested in at my dealer and even that was me compromising further( interior color ). 1 out of 42.

Anyway, it had the 8.4A which was a MUST. It had none of the other options but I can survive. I will add the factory hitch, wiring, and rear fascia when they become available( and maybe the oil cooler too ). I really wanted the Cold Weather Group for the remote start and heated mirrors. I can at least add remote start. Dealer said they will do the install/activate for free if I buy the MOPAR kit from them so that is good. They treat me good on accessories and parts so I will get a discount on the hitch stuff and the remote start. Because I didn't get all those other options it freed up cash to get the 3.2L V6!!! I know I said the 4 cyl was enough and all you need( I still believe that )but after driving the V6 I decided it is the better option because of my towing needs. Also, while kind of a lame reason to spend $1500 I must admit I like the looks of the rear end with the dual exhaust tips vs the 1 with the 2.4L. I was probably going to add the dual outlets to it if I got a 4cyl anyway so this saved that money and added better towing ability.

So in the end I am happy. Loving it so far in the limited driving I have done( about 60 miles ). I have to go to the dealer later this morning to have the Nav activated. It was part of the deal but they don't actually do it until papers are signed so it wasn't done when I was there in the PM. I didn't have time last night for them to do it so I am going in this morning. I did try out the hands free calling last night which was sweet. My LG smartphone paired instantly for me and the call quality was crystal clear on both ends. Voice activation worked flawlessly too. I have read of people having issues with this feature but it worked great for me last night.

Couple photos below. Kind of crappy as I grabbed them quick when I got there to get it yesterday. I will get better ones later...

2014 Jeep Cherokee
Latitude
3.2L Pentastar V6
Active Drive I 4WD
Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat
Iceland( Black & Gray )cloth interior

Re: Took the leap

Looks great!
Its better to get a bit more than not everything you wanted.
If the problems were that great and continuing, the Cherokees would be stacked up at dealers waiting for repairs. Other than the learning curve for the transmission, the transmission issues seems to be dissipating fast. It seems the TSB's are doing the trick.

Re: Took the leap

Put 100 miles on today and continue to enjoy the new vehicle. It really drives and rides great. Jeep hit a home run here IMO. I am slowly playing with things and learning the various features. Today I messed with the voice activation/command and was surprised at how well it worked. It uses common sense commands and it actually understands people without having to repeat yourself a million times. Actually, it hasn't asked me to repeat once. It did to my Dad one time but he said it wrong( hey he is 89 - credit for trying to learn ).

Next up is Uconnect and the apps as well as seeing how Sirius will integrate( traffic and weather and such ).

I did have the Nav activated this morning and that resulted in the 1st problem. It loses GPS signal and then tells me I am miles away from where I am. Happened to me 2X's today. Takes like 15 minutes when you start up after it has been off a bit to acquire signal. Totally unacceptable. At one point the map had me going west in a town 15+ miles from where I actually was AND I was actually going east! A GPS should take no more than 30 seconds to a minute max to get signal. I hope now that it has run a bit that this issue will go away. If not it is back to the dealer. When it did have signal it worked well at least.

NOTE - in case anyone was wondering this like I was. If you have the 8.4A with Nav activated in a Latitude the turn by turn directions do show in the EVIC between the speedo and tach. I couldn't find where it said it worked in the 3.5" B&W EVIC or just the 7" color one in the Limited and TH models. I can confirm now that it does in fact work in the base EVIC. You just have to select that option in the settings( GPS/Radio not EVIC ). Also, it only shows something when you are 1/4 mile or less away. It will show up and stay there until the turn. Once the next turn is more than 1/4 mile away it goes off until next time. I am glad it does this.

Re: Took the leap

UPDATE:

Nav issue definitely has to do with the signal. This morning I came out to go visit my aunt and decided to use the Nav to go there to see how it would take me and just as a general test run. Before trying to run it though I checked the signal. As I feared no signal again. So, I didn't try to use it and just drove off leaving the signal screen up to see how long it took to grab signal. About 2 minutes tops down the road it got signal and kept it the rest of the day. Looks like I just have to check the GPS signal and make sure it has it before trying to use it. As long as it gets it like it did today I am ok with it even if I feel/wish it should be faster. Today was at least borderline acceptable.

Got gas for the 1st time today just to see what it got even though I really didn't need it( 1/2 tank ). 201.4 miles on 9.07 gallons = 22.20 MPG. That was for a 50/50 mix and includes the 15 minutes+ idling at the dealer while they did the Nav activation. Not too bad I guess for the 1st tank. Just about what my Patriot did with similar use on the 1st tank. Hopefully as it breaks in and the weather warms up, and the darn winter fuel goes, MPG will improve.

Interesting note. This is the 1st time I have ever had a Chrysler onboard MPG computer ever tell me I got less than actual. Any Chrysler product I have had with this feature in the past has always been way over the top optimistic. Like 2-3 MPG more than actual. I was scared when I went to fill to be honest thinking I was only getting 17-18 MPG as the EVIC said 21.6 MPG. Turns out it was about a 1/2 MPG less than actual. I will gladly take that.

Finally got it into 8th gear today. Hadn't been able to get past 7th previously. Turns out I wasn't going fast enough to get the RPM's high enough on the highway to get into 8th. 60 MPH in CC results in 1600-1700 RPM's and keeps it in 7th. I bumped speeds today up to 65-70 MPH and finally got it to go into 8th. @ 65 MPH when it would keep 8th was about the same RPM's as 7th @ 60 MPH. I always went 60 MPH because it saved fuel. Maybe I will go 65 now seeing as the RPM's are the same. I have yet to see 9th gear at any time. Guess I just don't go fast enough.

Re: Took the leap

Congrats NHP! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new ride. Sharp looking vehicle. I already see more of them on the road than '14 GCs, so I think the guys at Jeep got this one right.
