Tow Group - Change the way it drives ?

We have a Cherry Red Limited coming over on the boat -and the product list our dealer has sent us (with VIN, etc) indicates it has AHT - Tow Group also included....

As I'm still struggling to understand the Jeep spec brochure (which has an "A" next to it) - is that standard on Longitude up in Australia ?

Does the Tow Group change the way it drives (not that we'll be towing anytime soon) ? I know it has a different final drive ratio of 3.517 (not sure what that means in layman's terms).

Re: Tow Group - Change the way it drives ?

Welcome to the club. You probably will never notice anything with the tow but that little better gear ratio will help a little bit to get her moving. More important is does it have the AD2 tranni? That gives you the higher ride height and a bit stiffer shocks and springs. The tow group does give you a full size spare so less room in the back lower compartment. Same brakes/rotors. and the hvy duty cooling. We love our 14 granite limited with tow/ the first 900 miles the display had us at 27-28 MPG. Just make sure when it leaves the dealer you have the latest version of the radio and backup cam or it may studder. and the latest transmission update. DEMAND both at the dealer.

Follow the regular break in procedure for the first 300 miles and if tow the first 500 miles of towing do not driver over 50 mph, Yes that's the separate TOW break in procedure.

Yes, what Redline R/T said. Here's a bit more on the topic:

The higher final drive ratio (e.g. 3.2L engine: 3.517 w/ Tow Group versus 3.251 without Tow Group) means that for a given gear at a given speed, the engine will be reving 8% higher (3.517/3.251 = 108%) with the tow package. For example: 1800 RPM without the tow package becomes 1950 RPM with the tow package. The higher reving puts the engine in a higher place on the torque/horsepower curve to help deal with the extra towing weight/strain. I suspect there's a marginal loss in overall MPG with the higher FDR, but I'm not sure if it's material or not.

I hope this helps.

Re: Tow Group - Change the way it drives ?

Interesting....we didn't ask for Tow Group but I'm not sure if it's standard on Australian models or not as they all have full size spares here (and options seem to be different between the US and Australia).

Redline, no it's AD I (ADII only appears in the Trailhawk). So I guess if you don't have any extra load being towed that the FDR might just change it's handling a bit but that it's more set up for the day we put a tow harness on (if that happens).

This car is one the dealer has purchased and is on the boat - we chose it because it had the options we wanted

ADII is an option here in US on all the models. You get the transmission and off road suspension, ride height is 1" or so higher. We don't get the Trailhawk wheels or tires. Limited get the 18" rim but same height tire.

Re: Tow Group - Change the way it drives ?

We thought about a Trailhawk, but honestly - I've never gone off road in my life, and I don't think a car purchase would change that (plus you can't drive on any beaches in our state although there are quite a number of off road trails in the bush !)

ADII is standard on the Aust spec'ed CRD Limited. The Trailhawk has additional AD Lock though.

Hey SJ - do you think your Diesel will be a MY15 - has the dealer indicated that ?

Good question and no the dealer hasn't indicated anything other than the MY14. Infact we haven't even talked about the possibility of it being an MY15 even when we were in there the other day for the service on the GC and spent a bit of time chatting about the KL as well as pouring over the TH they had in the showroom. Gosh the TH is a nice looking vehicle isn't it?

The more I see the KL, the more I love the shape and look.

I'm assuming an MY14 though and anything different will be a bonus.
