Towing

Is it ok to tow a boat with my new Cherokee? I am thinking it will need a few weeks to break in the tranny properly.

Re: Towing

Read your owner's manual. It tells you how long to wait before towing.

Re: Towing

I know it's probably overkill however even if I had my hitch in place, I had not plan on towing anything till after the first oil change.

Re: Towing

The Owners manual is an absolute!
From what I remember, because I tow a boat, it is as follows:
No Towing first 500 miles, period.
I would give it to 1,000-1500 miles if you can. But again that's my preference.
Do not exceed 50 mph for the first 500 miles of towing! That is an absolute!
That is actual towing not mileage between tows.
Also no full throttle accelerations etc. while towing. Why? HEAT.
The reason is your gears, both transmission and axle(s). They need time to adjust to the higher loads and HEAT. They need to temper and meld.
You do not want to overheat them as if you do you will probably damage your transmission and axle fluid. The odds are highest on your axle. If fluid gets damaged that is not a good thing. The good thing is the fluid is very good these days.
Also for the first 500 miles I will not tow non stop for more 75-100 miles without pulling over and letting everything cool down for awhile. But that is my preference.

Just be sure to know your tow limits on this Cherokee. Just because its 4500 lbs. with V6 and Tow Group does not mean you can tow that 4500 safely. That is another whole story in itself.
Any other set up is 2,000 lbs. including non tow group set ups., period.
Things like trailer brakes are required above a certain weight by State and MFG requirements.
I can not emphasize enough that proper break in is very important to avoid future issues.
Also You need to understand the increased maintenance will be needed like changing fluids for transmission and axle(s). In this case more is better than less. With Towing fluids are not life time/100,000 miles.
That is also in the book. I will do maintenance a lot stricter than what the book says.
Good Luck and have fun with the boat.

Re: Towing

My True blue limited is still on the railcar at final destination but I agree. This vehicle will not be towing anything heavy until fall. I may tow a utility trailer but will still use common sense. Luckily I have a Pontiac torrent I can keep to do the heavy haul and will sell privately as opposed to trading it in when the time is right.

Re: Towing

We have a Cherokee north on order for the purpose of towing our tent trailer. I hope it gets here before we want to start camping judging by what I read.

Once again, follow the break in to the letter. You will have two break ins to do.
The Cherokee for 300 miles and then the trailer for 500 miles.
That means that the earliest you could even start your tow is 500 miles.
There is a do not tow for the first 500 miles.
Its all in the manual. You do not want to overheat the gears early on.
Have fun camping. I remember those days with my coleman pop up.
Lots of enjoyment!
