Trailhawk with the penstastar engine.

Has anyone had one long enough to fill it up once to see what mpg they are getting? I'm going to order my Trailhawk on Saturday and not sure which engine to get. I want pentastar but may have to go smaller depending on mpg.

Still waiting on the Trailhawk, but FuelEconomy.gov has them rated at 19/25 for the 2.4 and 18/25 for the 3.2.

Compare Side-by-Side

If it's really that close, I'd say 3.2.

So what is it about the TH w/ the 2.4L that drops it to 19/25 vs the other 4WD models rated at 21/28? Final drive ratio?

Looks like a no brainer in the TH if you are talking only 1 MPG difference city to go with the 3.2L if you can afford the $1500 for the V6.

I am guessing it is a mix of the much lower gearing and the AT tires. Plus the trailhawks don't have the active shutter technology like the others do.

I would never buy one with a 4 cylinder period. The only way is if it is like the Ecoboost. My fusion didn't have a whole lot of power and it was about the same amount of power and 1000 pounds lighter. No amount of gearing can make up for that at highway speed.

Drove my Trailhawk with V6 first - tried a 4 in a Sport just to know the difference. Big difference, worth the extra cost for V6.

Probably wouldn't want a 4 in a vehicle with this weight but it would work OK and use less gasoline.

Fuel Economy?
I believe the EPA uses 100% gas with no ethanol for the tests.
Most stations have/sell only ethanol blended fuel. I know Illinois requires that the pumps be marked if the fuel contains ethanol.
I do have a station that sells both.
My 04 Grand Cherokee V8 will get 1-1.5 sometimes 2 MPG better mileage with 100% gas. So I would assume with ethanol 19 mpg (city) Cherokee V6 will be around 17-18 mpg vs. EPA 19 MPG.
I'm looking toward testing this out when my ordered one gets built.

Bought many a tank of gas for my wife's pentastar 2011 GC overland. I have always gotten the EPA estimate on 87 octane, no matter what. If I drive 80 on the highway it does 21 -22. If I do 70 it does 23 as advertised. Around town my wife drives the tach in the green stripe and gets far better than the 16 mpg on the sticker... usually it checks out at just a tick over 20 mpg.
