Using your Jeep to Jump another car

Hi Guys,

We are loving our Limited Cherokee and will be putting it on the road for a long road trip in a few days. I have a question, we were at the gas station filling up and this guy needed a jump. My husband got out the cables and agreed to give the guy a jump. I'm was on the phone with a friend and I tell them what my husband is about to do. They say no it might short out your electrical system. I immediately said no we can't give him a jump and another person stepped up to help the man. Is if ok to use your 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited to jump another car? KWC

Sure you can as long as you do it correctly. There should be a section in your owner's manual telling you how to do it properly.

Re: Using your Jeep to Jump another car

Years ago when Fuel injection and other electronics were becoming standard there used to be a discussion about equalizing the batterys.
The flat battery would be at say 6 volts and the jumper would be at 12 volts.
If you jump the flat battery it will begin charging but still be flat, if you take the jumper leads away then there is still a large potential difference between the old and new batteries that can cause and arcing (spark) to occur when the leads are removed.

Allowing the 2 cars to run for a few minutes still connected is supposed to minimize the risk. Perhaps newer cars are protected from this anyhow?
