Years ago when Fuel injection and other electronics were becoming standard there used to be a discussion about equalizing the batterys.
The flat battery would be at say 6 volts and the jumper would be at 12 volts.
If you jump the flat battery it will begin charging but still be flat, if you take the jumper leads away then there is still a large potential difference between the old and new batteries that can cause and arcing (spark) to occur when the leads are removed.
Allowing the 2 cars to run for a few minutes still connected is supposed to minimize the risk. Perhaps newer cars are protected from this anyhow?
