My Explorer most definitely does not have a "few years" left. The sea air has ravaged the old girl. The power steering hard lines rusted through and burst, the brake hard lines rusted through and burst, the a/c compressor rusted and seized, the rear doors can no longer be opened, the hydraulic lift gate arm rusted through and broke off so I have to prop up the rear gate with a stick, the mechanic needed a hammer and chisel to get my wheels off last time, just yesterday the screws holding the plastic molding on the roof rusted through and the molding flew off, I literally shovel up rusted bits that fall off in the driveway on a semi-regular basis ...
My normal mechanic now flat-out refuses to do any more work on the car and insists I must replace it immediately. The mechanic I just took it to for the brake line failure says it "scares the hell out of him" and can't believe I'm actually driving it.
I really want the jeep diesel, but if my feet go through the floor ala Fred Flinstone before the diesel is released I may have to either go with a different manufacturer or go for the hemi.
