So, if I've understood correctly, here are the clues we have so far: - Best I can tell, Chevy is telling us there was a parts shortage - it's basically "obvious" and could be seen - if I'm understanding correctly, this part has been holding up the homologation approval, which seems to be about to occur tomorrow. - It seems that it's related to the urea - It's not the urea fluid - It's not the urea cap - It's not the urea tank - It's not a sticker I'm going to let that info percolate for a bit and see if anything comes up.
The tank wasn't ruled out and seemed to be confirmed if you reread Chevys message.

I guessed the tank and Blinker said:

And that's an edited version of his response. His first response didn't say "close but no cigar" it said "It's not the tank". Blinker seems to be another insider, so even though Chevy didn't rule it out (and, as you said, almost seemed to be pointing at it) I'm taking Blinker's response as ruling it out.

Well, since this thread has gone left turn a couple of times, I got this feeling that whoever is homologating (correct spelling?), it is homologating the urea tank. This is from Wikipedia: "Although not toxic, DEF can cause the catastrophic de-oxidation of water bodies leading to damage of the aquatic environment."

Maybe the pee tank needs certification that it is safe in case of a crash?

Clash of the insiders then!

Is there a level sensor in the DEF tank that needed updating or replacement?

Chevy is one of the few factory guys on here that actually builds our GC's. He has been an awesome source of knowledge as well as inviting us to a factory tour. He dedicates his personal time to come here and answer questions the best he can. I would hate to lose his input....so if we are irritating him, that's not good. Just saying'...

Re: 2014 diesel production

OK, I don't have any bright ideas, so here is a stream-of-consciousness list of not-so-bright ideas in case it inspires someone else, in mostly decreasing order of my perceived likelihood.

- a protective plate for the urea tank. I know someone earlier suggested a skid plate, but maybe that was pedantically discredited. Maybe it's not a skid plate per se, but still some type of safety plate.
-> would seem to fist most, if not all, of the criteria

- parts shortage of the urea cap caused a supplier change and the new cap had to be approved by the safety/homologating body
-> fits most of the criteria, except it appeared to have been ruled out, but maybe we were overzealous in our interpretation of the comments

- some type of locking/protective mechanism for the urea cap

- a sensor for the urea system (would be hard to see, so unlikely)

- a fill restricter for the urea tank (also would be hard to see, so unlikely)
