Toureg? Personally I just can't warm up to the bland, jellybean look of that thing. It is plenty quick though...

Yes, it was a Taeioureg. I agree with you. They look and feel soft and bland.

Surprised thought I read somewhere they rode more car-like, more sporty.

Re: 2014 diesel production

Yesterday I drove a new Touareg TDI and I was impressed. Lots of power and (for an SUV) precise handling. I am still going to hold out for the JGC diesel as I don't think that the Touareg would hold up to the off road driving that I will be doing near our place in the Colorado mountains.
BTW, while "bland looking" there appears to be significantly fewer Touareg owners complaining about quality issues than the Jeep complaints I see here.

The off road driving is pretty much the only reason I haven't gone with a Touareg over the JGC.

Drive both of them down a decently rough street and you will want to buy the Jeep. The suspension is generally more forgiving in the Jeep. You can't even get air suspension in the Touareg even if you wanted it.

I think the on road matters too. Both of them are great on perfect roads. The Jeep is far better in choppy pavement.

The Touareg is a refresh for 2014 as well ... No details yet but there will be an R-Line model available as well (sportier package ... More aluminum minded interior vs wood). Lots of options this fall for people looking for a midsize/full size SUV.

Re: 2014 diesel production

I haven't test drove a Toureg but just by the styling it has I wouldn't even give it a thought. So bland... Now throw an Audi Q5 my way and we'll talk.

We were considering the Audi Q5 and Q7 but the Q7 seems too big and the Q5 a touch small ... Seem accurate?

We looked at the Q5 briefly when considering other options than the GC, but yes, it is pretty small. Probably about the same size inside as our TSX SportWagon. Just going by eyesight, it seems a little larger than the GLK250/350, but not by much. The Q7 seems pretty big, but we didn't sit in it.

I could be mistaken, but didn't VW initially try to sell the Touareg as a completely off-road capable vehicle? I think it could sit in a couple feet of water and not leak, just like the GC. I haven't seen anything in marketing materials since launch about it, but I believe that was supposed to be the case.

I also think it has a low-range gearbox for 4MOTION included?

Yes and they so used to have a killer massive Diesel to support that claim. I remember the winter off-road commercials now that you mention it. Watch the motor trend review the dude is actually a little scared off-roading in it
