IMO, it's better than ULSD. I mean, it doesn't impress the heck out of me, but I'm not a biodiesel hater. And I haven't heard of nearly the amount of problems as what's seen from ULSD. A lot less filter plugging and corrosion than ULSD, but I have heard some stories... But aside from that, the power isn't the same running either vs. throwback petrol diesel.

Collectively, all the emissions stuff and ULSD took Caterpillar out of the heavy-truck industry and I'm still sad about it. They just gave up. And some of the other HD diesel manufacturers are still on the hot seat. But bc you all won't be using 100% of the engine's power all the time like we do, I think you all could make out a lot better. Just change those filters religiously. Bc all this new diesel fuel holds a lot of water. And gels quick.

Chevy, it would be cool if you posted a video of them loading a rail car. Any chance you can do that?

And congrats to all the new KZ's.

Easy, I have 5 diesels of various makes all post 2005 in our business. One thing we have found is dont use that envionmentally friendly bio diesel. Makes alot of soot, and that clings onto the turbo vanes, and over time falls off in clumps destroying the turbo. We managed to single this out as one of our guys always used the same fuel stop, and they only sold bio diesel.
The oldest of our diesel fleet is a VW 1.9 lt TDi, and the only issue we have had with it was a gearbox bearing. Nothing else repaired or replaced. It recieved its 240, 000km service in june.

Diesels just keep on going, with great economy and service intervals. I remember watching a UK car show and they ran a stock MB diesel sedan on vegetable oil. Other than a slightly rough idle, you would not have known.

I am with Chevy and Excursion in my thinking on this. I have had Mercedes ML Bluetecs that I have owned and also been part of the business fleets in places I work.

There were never any major engine component failures well into the 120k miles on any of them EVER. Sure the maintenance was a little more with AdBlue but the failures were always crap like the power folding mirrors would all break the internal signal wires after 4 years.

One of the Sprinters and one of the MLs needed AdBlue Heater lines but other than that, we did brakes and oil changes. Some got close to 200k but we usually got rid of them by then. Fuel quality has always been the bigger concern (also the loss of sulfur) but if you are aware of where you buy, there are rarely problems.

Personally I have never seen an intake need to be done on any of the more modern units. Most common failure I have seen and not in a fleet I had anything to do with was improper maintenance and water getting into injectors. That was happening long before 2007 though!

If you do happen to get close to it, my vin is EC298514. I certainly don't expect you to track it down and am not asking you to, but I figured I'd give you the info just in case.
You have a small speedbump involving a reprogram but otherwise clear.

Thanks to all for the help.
The sticker program is overwhelmed from the mass exodous from all the yards in SE MI (Cherokee and Grand Cherokee). Usage is up.

Only dealers can sell the service contracts.

Actually none. Tomorrow will be the big day. None in VOTS have actually hit KZL yet. Over 400 are just about there though.

The 2003 7.3L had a EGR. Just saying. You had a bad experience with a diesel. Others have not. See below.

Post-2007, good luck reaching 250k without some maintaince. Not at 50k though.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the absolute WORST thing that's happened to the diesel industry is ULSD. Not egr. Not dpf's and regen systems. Not urea injection. It's the fuel itself. All of those other things do have secondary effects on performance and longevity. But I promise you all, the fuel has had the biggest effect.
Actually, the ULSD is what allowed the DPF/SCR systems. Which is why it was mandated back in 07 and DPF/SCR was instituted in 2010. ULSD burns MUCH cleaner. Biodiesel even more so. While the plural of ancedote is not data, many of the people on the TDI forums don't have to clean their intakes and EGR valves as much as they use to since the fuel is cleaner. I still need to clean my '03s intake as it is nearly clogged up (hasn't ever been cleaned and it has 270k miles on it).

Pretty much. In the new systems the engine is much happier with the ULSD and BioD. The exhaust system is much more complicated and that is where the issues have been. The only thing I have seen is exclusive use of BioD of 20% or greater concentration causes the oil to get a bit more diluted than normal. If you perform normal oil changes, this is not an issue. Those people that like to extend their oil changes beyond the manufacturer spec through choice or Amsoil need to be aware of that though.
