Re: 2014 diesel production

Is anyone concerned that the first production diesels may have quality issues? From what I can see, for example, the initial 2014s had more issues than those made only 5 months later.

My concern stems from the fact that the lease on my BMW runs in October. I need to order something from someone by mid to late August, be it another BMW or a Jeep. We are heavily leaning towards an Overland V6, but wouldn't mind trying the CRD. I'm not about to order one blind having never driven one!

Every dealer I've talked to said if I ordered one, and hated it when it arrived, they wouldn't make me keep it and would refund my deposit. They'd rather lose the sale than lose a customer, at least that's what they tell me now.... So as long as you are serious about it and intend to keep it assuming you like it, I don't think it would be a problem with most dealers.

Well, I share your concerns as to whether or not to be a "guinea pig" for a first released model; not only the intro of the 2014s as you mentioned, but going back aways, the intro of the WJs in 1999-2000 wasn't too smooth, either. It seems that most if not all the bugs in this new model have been worked out, except for the unknown about the integration of the USA version of the CRD into the equation. Most of that involves the emissions equipment and related computer programming (someone jump in if I've forgotten anything else). So, all things considered, I think I'm still willing to take a chance on this one. Maybe not the very first ones to roll off the assembly line, but probably within a month or two of production start.

Popular Mechanics said the CRD was one of the 10 SUV's worth waiting for in June, 2012. Been waiting since around August (after getting a camper trailer). I did drive the Explorer Sport in early November just to confirm the GC is the right vehicle. If the Explorer had a larger fuel tank, I might have gone with it.

I am guessing that the first ones off the line might be the one's most scrutinized, making me more comfortable that I'm getting a quality vehicle. I also take comfort knowing that many of these have already been made for overseas consumption, with the only notable change for U.S. being the emissions system. 10 years ago I took delivery of one of the first Nissan Murano's shortly after their introduction, and it has been a trouble free vehicle, but now after 10 years it is showing its age and it is time for replacement.

Keep in mind, most of the issues have been related to body panel alignment and electrical issues (ground not being tightened down anyone?).

This issues, are likely to be taken care of by the time the CRD rolls out. The petrolheads that came before us had the fun issues with the UConnect system and such that they have since issued patches for (though, issues remain, and likely will remain... ask anyone using the Ford MySync system).

Body panel and such issues, I doubt will be as gnarly as before.

As for the engine, it's a variant of one that's been in service for a good while now, but, given where it is coming from, I'm not overly worried.

And this is what I'm counting on, but still, scrutinizing during production does not mean there might not be some "real world" issues after we start driving it. But still, the risk is minimized, and that's what I'm focusing on.

Temararius captured the essence of what I referred to in build issues for the 2014. The USA emissions and integration is the unknown factor, I believe.

This is excruciating! Extremely excited to see these numbers... I just hope Limited production starts shortly hereafter. A long as I can order in August I will at least be temporarily settled. Over a year of waiting... What's a couple more months

Re: 2014 diesel production

I submitted my order to the dealer on 1/23/2013. I did change the interior color a few months back though.

The ZF transmission and the Bosch Fuel Injection system may be coming from Germany for the early USA CRD's. Most certainly in the future they will be made here. I have owned 4 German built cars. I like German built cars. For me, this is one reason to get an early one.

From Wiki:
Quote:
Chrysler Group LLC will initially receive the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions from the ZF Getriebe GmbH plant in Saarbrücken, Germany. By 2013, in parallel with Chrysler Group, ZF is setting up a new transmission production plant in North America, where the 8-speed transmissions will be produced.[6] ZF Friedrichshafen and Chrysler Group have reached a supply and license agreement for ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler Group is licensed to produce the 8HP at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plant and the Kokomo Casting plant, starting in 2013.
From a Bosch press release:
Quote:
The clean diesel emission system for the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be assembled at Bosch’s facility in Kentwood, Mich. As a result of this project and other targeted projects, the Bosch Emission Systems operation in Kentwood intends to secure 100 high-tech jobs by the end of 2014.

Does this mean they'll be showing up in dealerships in August/September?

My guess is they will be doing lots of testing with these, while they may end up in dealerships, I think it is unlikely they will get there any time soon. I could be wrong.

The only reason I think they are making these before they take orders is so when we, the early adopters, place orders, we don't get lemons. Because we will scream the loudest if we do get lemons.
