Re: 2014 diesel production

They say the diesel will pay for itself in 35,000 miles. Based on 15,000 miles a year, that would take 2.333.... years to pay for itself. If you keep your vehicle for 10 years, think of all the money you save with the high MPG of the diesel.

Re: 2014 diesel production

What's really going to suck is that I won't be able to order a limited diesel... so its either wait yet ANOTHER month or upgrade to an overland.

Last year when diesel was 50 cents more than gas, I figured maybe 100,000 miles to break even. If it stays at 10 cents over, the payback will be much quicker. Over the long haul, gas is going to keep going up. I think diesel is the future.

Deserve? Sure. Want? Nah, don't really care to pay an extra 5 grand for puddle lamps and chrome tow hooks.

I've been waiting for the diesel for about 18 months now. Just as it's about to become available, I think I've changed my mind to the V6. Here's my reasoning.

I primarily wanted the diesel as a fuel efficient way of getting some decent power (read: speed). My previous car (before I lemoned it) was a BMW 335i and, though that car had more power than I would ever need, it was really nice to be able to cut through LA traffic at will (safely, of course). My primary uses for the Jeep are going to be city driving, and when I do get out of the concrete jungle, it's usually for camping or snowboarding trips. I don't RV, I don't tow, and I don't work on construction sites. So the driving force for me to get the diesel was the quicker 0-60 time (7.8 sec instead of 8.7 sec I believe) without sacrificing on fuel costs (essentially breakeven fuel costs, disregarding the up-front price of the diesel).

A couple weeks ago, I rented a 4x2 V6 for a day trip to Big Bear (the local ski resort near Los Angeles). I wanted to see how it performed on the highway leading up to the hill and also how it climbed the hill, passed up hill, etc.

I have to admit, I was pretty impressed. When Eco mode is on, the acceleration is a bit fidgety when you floor it, but with Eco mode off (and especially in Sport mode), the V6 picks up pretty well! I had no problem passing up hill (even getting up to 70mph on uphill straightaways to pass). The handling on twisty mountain roads was better than I expected.

Having never driven a Jeep diesel, I guess I don't know what I might be missing, but I think the V6 has enough power for my needs. I drove the X5 diesel a couple months ago, and it was pretty much as fast as the hemi Jeep. But, given that the V6 is fast enough for me, I don't think "F-you" speed is worth it to me to 1) wait another month for Limited diesels to become available, 2) risk engineering / mechanic familiarity issues during Chrysler's first year using this engine, and 3) not have the option of lifetime warranty.

The hardest part about switching to the V6 is that I've been waiting so long for the CRD...and I could have ordered the $%&!#*@ V6 4 months ago!!

Anyway, that's my $0.02

I think you should really wait to drive the diesel before you decide.

Ideally, I'd agree. But that means I wait until October to drive one, place an order in November, and receive my car in January. That's a little tough to swallow (but advice worth heeding).
