Re: 2014 diesel production

"Traditional thinking"in the US is based on preconceived ideas that have prevented small diesel engines from gaining popularity. Diesels are inherently 30% more efficient. Diesel fuel does not cost 30% more....more like 10%. There are savings to be had and a definite payback for anyone planning to keep a vehicle more than 3 years or drives a lot.

The rest of the world has a better grasp on this.

30% improvement is actually the lowest end of the scale of savings from my actual driving experience in a 3 liter diesel and that is before you tow anything.

For those wondering why Jeep isn't offering the diesel on the Laredo, this article claims to have the answer:
http://www.dieselpowermag.com/featur...l/viewall.html
"Currently, the diesel will not be offered on the Laredo, as our understanding is that Jeep is offering the engine at what is essentially cost, which the company makes up for on the premium content of the higher-end trim levels."

Also Sadly why "Limited" trim will be limited allocation.

Re: 2014 diesel production

So all the "premium vehicles" are subsidizing the real cost of the diesel? Sounds like B$ to me. $4500 is a typical adder vs the base engine option.

But if its true, thanks to all the new Overland and Summit gas burner owners!

Well I wouldn't go as far as subsidizing it. I have seen some factual information that that initial costs on the Diesel are not a bread winner for Chrysler. They want to get them out there and get it recognised so that the volumes on the small Diesels continue to climb to a point of better profitability.

Re: 2014 diesel production

And if you believe that...

Is called the "new demand" principle and is as old as horses. When you have something >NEW< then you can make extra profits from people whose other car is a Prius.

Since the major reason for a diesel is people who drive and tow A Lot particularly for business then the real sustainable market is in the Laredo.

Also since making the Diesel avaialble with or without various packages is just a tic box in a computer program and the EPA does not distingush between option groups (else the MPG rating for a Summit would be different than a Laredo) there is no physical reason not to offer in everything possible. After all, some people just do not like chrome.

In the end state the only option group that makes sense for the diesel is the towing package.

ps in the '60s in order to buy a Z-28 Camaro you had to accept rear bumper guards.

So Milous, any updates to the production numbers from a few weeks back? Are those mixes still the same and are those for August now (which really only has a weeklong production, right?)?

After 18+ months of waiting... Starting to get ancy for my limited CRD

Re: 2014 diesel production

I do because it is a "buy" item that comes from a joint venture project, so I am aware of the costs. Those costs are based on the engine commitment for the year in units not EPA certification for the engine.

I also don't think that trailering is the only requirement?

P.S. I have never owned a prius and I would still buy a diesel Summit even if I didn't have a trailer. I already know the payback, I had an ML320.

that worries me that Milous hasn't seen an updated report. That probably means it doesn't exist which could mean another delay?

You heard it here first folks, another possible delay. Let's see how many of you freak out!
