Re: 2014 EcoDiesel Overland Transmission Issue

We have had a large number of 8 speeds with "shudder" also called "fishbites" reported on this forum. Most are Hemi or Diesel related. I've never heard anyone report that it is an issue with the vehicle trying to go into regen. In fact, there have been several TSBs that have been released to solve shift quality. I wish it was a regen issue. That would be an easy fix in software.

If the shudder occurs on the first occurrence of the 5 to 6 shift under light throttle after startup and then goes away if you accelerate or downshift, it's the same issue as others are having. A new TSB update to the TCM is due soon to address this. Mine does it sparadically...I just accelerate through it quickly for now.

I have that...

And a constant random vibration in all gears 5-8

Only goes away if I floor it. Happens at like 15% throttle.

You have now

From the description from the OP, I would guess his issue is a little different, and sounds more like the issue I linked to, than the typical 8speed shudder. Since it fixed the problem for that owner, I'd think it's probably worth some consideration.....

Certainly worth consideration! If its a regen issue, I'd gladly accept that. I just hope Jeep has a fix soon, whatever the cause.

I believe small displacement diesels are the way forward for SUVs and Light Duty Pickups. I am totally impressed with the performance and economy...its everything I expected. If they get the emissions and tranny issues solved, my JGC diesel will be perfect.

That being said, I'd hang tight for a bit to see what we get. Should be soon.
OK - Your comments about small diesels are spot on, and that's why I ordered it. I really appreciate your input. Both you guys! (Raven) I know my dealer will give me trouble if I try to cancel, but I've sure got a lot more leverage if I haven't paid for anything yet other than the deposit. (as a side note - one day after I ordered the car, a month ago, I realized I had mistakenly not specified the RA4 radio which I really want, and the dealer said it was too late to change the order. I ended up successfully changing it by going to a western regional HQ guy who was very helpful. But before that happened I was told the only recourse I had was to refuse the car when it was delivered. And here we are a month later and the car has not even been scheduled for build yet. Make you wonder about who's trying to be helpful or not.......)

I love everything about the car that I read prior to joining this forum, but now I'm wondering if I should just tell my dealer to cancel my order. Between the shift issues, DEF issues, cat issues, I'm wondering if Jeep knows what they're doing?? My other choice was a Toyota Highlander (I have a 2005 Highlander with 160,000 miles without any problems for 10 years) - not exactly the same idea as the Grand Cherokee but probably a whole lot more dependable.

I want to take long drives to see family in other states, maybe drive to Alaska. I want to actually get where I'm pointed! It sounds like I'd be asking for trouble with this Jeep unless there is a fix that actually fixes something.

Raven, Excursion Diesel - what would you guys do at this point. Any confidence that the 2015's will be any better or just more of the same problems?

Very late build 2014 Limited EcoDiesel 4x4. Got it 01 JULY 2014, have just over 10000 miles on it. Zero problems what-so-ever. NONE. Installed Dom's DEF skid plate the day I took ownership, the swapped tires/wheels from a 2013 Trailhawk. Pumped in 5 gallons of DEF over the course of 10k miles - all purchased at the pump of a high-traffic truck-stop. Had the trans update done at 9100 w/first oil change.

Mine is a coil Jeep - no Quadralift. It does have Off-road I and full rock rails. Ordered without the either sunroof, but it does have 8.4 NAV.

I have confidence in this Jeep going the distance, and I intend to keep it for quite awhile. I did own a previous generation 2008 WK diesel - did 99,900 almost trouble free miles before trading it(needed a crank-position sensor, covered under warranty) - so I'm not new to Jeep diesels, or diesels for that matter.

Thanks Jason. Nice to hear someone who's happy! I wish more satisfied owners would chime in! FWIW - my car on order is similar to yours: Limited, 4WD without quadralift. Definitely 8.4AN/RA4 radio.

No issues with mine. November 2013 build and never had any transmission updates.
