2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

Hi all,
Well, I was towing my 25' Keystone Laredo 23RB, on my way to Alaska, when the engine blew in Pleasanton. We were going up the Senol grade, and the engine started to warm up, didn't get into the red, then the motor started making a loud diesel rattle, but there was no system indications of any problems. As we topped the summit, it stopped as we went down the other side, I kept scanning the dash, but once again no indications of problems. I started hearing a loud thumping sound, and thought I might have blown a tire on the trailer, so I started looking for a wide shoulder. I had my wide spot in sight when the low oil pressure warning flashed on the screen. I was heading for my spot, when the motor gave a last loud diesel rattle, and died. I managed to coast into the spot, off the road.
Fortunately two days before, I had signed up with Good Sam roadside assistance, they got a tow truck to haul both my Jeep and trailer to the nearest dealer.
According to the service manager, I need a new motor. Fortunately, I use a local mechanic to service the Jeep, so I had records of both oil changes. The bad news is that FCA insists on having tests done on the oil, water and fuel to see if they can pin it on me. Anyway my trip is delayed for at least a couple of weeks. May even need to be canceled, since it takes a couple of weeks each way, and my Wife needs a medical procedure mid August.
Don't know why the engine should have blown. The trailer is an ultra light, weighs only 5k empty, and has a GVWR of 7k, both well within the towing capacity of the Jeep (7.2k). I'm set up with a beefy load-leveling hitch with sway control. I have a proportional break controller. The Jeep is a Limited with the diesel, tow package, advanced technology package, air suspension, etc. I've towed the trailer with the Jeep several times before, up hill and down, never had a problem. I have been extremely happy with it up to now.
The one thing I hate about this is according to the service manager, I have to wait for FCA to make up their mind, so they can't tell me when it will be done. I can't make any plans.
oh well.
Bob.

Re: 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

It is only reasonable for the FCA to see what the fluids show. I don't think they are looking for a way out but a cause. Lets face it there will be a certain number of engines that fail and unfortunately yours was one of them. That number is very small but still in your case FCA needs to consider the circumstances. Clearly being stranded in the middle of nowhere isn't exactly what you had in mind.
Please keep us posted but to be honest the luck of the draw.

I have had a number of engine failures but not catastrophic like yours is.

Best of luck and this is the 2nd failure posted on here with the first another member at 19K miles....

It sucks, but play along with FCA and let them complete the investigation. I am sure they will fix the issue. Since, you don't have any tune or deletes (I suppose), you have not a thing to worry about. Yes, it is going to be nuisance to deal with this situation that will last few weeks.

Re: 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

According to the Ram 1500 Diesel board, and others on line, there is a problem with a few Eco Diesels. Something about the connecting rods. It seems to happen more often (4 or 5 other engines out of the thousands produced) to the Ram trucks than to the Jeeps.
Lucky Me!

I would ask the dealer to proceed with the engine replacement. That way when the test results come back, you'll be further along with the repair.

Re: 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

The Chrysler service in Pleasanton is terrible. They didn't offer a loaner, basically put it on me as to what I was going to do. They were full of promises to help me figure out what to do with my trailer, but didn't do anything. They have this large empty field behind their shop where they park most of their commercial vehicles, but they wouldn't let me park the trailer there. The service rep. tells me he has no way to move my trailer across the street, then a few minutes later tells me about his RAM 2500! The only comment of when they will start on my truck was "Well we have to have patience to wait for FCA to do all of their tests."

How does one contact FCA to apply pressure?

Re: 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

So I called FCA customer care, and Pat told me today that the dealer was authorized to buy a new engine. I then called the Stoneridge CJD parts department, and they said they ordered it, and expect delivery in 5 to 7 days. Don't know if it's true, but there's hope.

This happened to my '14 on 4/16. Same thing. No lights, no messages... Just a rattle like a bolt in a blender. I knew we had to get right to the dealer and just made it when it died.

I lawyered up and filed a Lemon Law demand 30 days into the process. My attorney believes the repurchase will be complete by next week which will make it week 11. I made this decision when I realized that the "customer support" people at FCA were as unresponsive as the dealer. For whatever reason FCA's corporate culture doesn't seem to include any real support for this type of failure.

If you live in CA I wouldn't wait. The sooner you file, the less stress you will have to experience.

Re: 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee blew engine 20k

I've given up on calling the phone numbers for support - they take too long to respond and you often wait on hold for an hour. I just tweek @ChryslerCares when I have an issue and they get back to me w/in minutes and often call me outright to fix the issue. I've been lucky with my Jeep so far as I've only to tweet once to get car rental refunded when my Ecodiesel was in the shop to get the SCR catalyst replaced under warranty. It only took 24 hours total as the dealer has done many before and knew the ropes.

It always sounds fancy to "lawyer up", but remember, the moment you involve an attorney, you can kiss goodbye to FCA customer support and your case will be handled by the legal team of FCA and every communication you will get from dealer or FCA customer service will first be approved by their attorney. Or at least i can speak of for GM and Audi.

What customer service? From the first contact with the dealer through the escalation process at FCA there was nothing but obfuscation, evasion and recalcitrance. In fact calling it "customer service" belittles the concept of customer service everywhere.

Personally I'm very grateful for my attorneys and the job they've done for me. Our settlement was approved today and I expect to have the check in hand long before the new motor finally makes its way into the Jeep. Three months is long enough to be dealing with this issue. It's sad that it took legal intervention to get the company to do the right thing. So I guess if you call that "fancy"well then I'm "extra fancy"!
