Gas electric (series or parallel) hybrids work very well in congested traffic where stop and go. Diesels do poorly here as they can't get up to operating temp as easily and run hard where it eases emissions compliance. On the flip side, diesels shine when under constant speed and load - where hybrids do poorly as they run batteries out fast and no longer have the electric assist.
I just read the Prius can now tow 1,500 lbs which I guess is nice if you need to in a pinch but once moving and it cannot regenerate from braking it will get normal gas car mileage and need lots of revs to tow making it a very poor candidate.
