2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Trailhawk vs 2016/17 Toyota 4runner Trail Edition

My friend is stuck in choosing between a Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, preferably a 2017 Trailhawk model, and a 4runner Trail Edition. He is looking for a rig that is reliable, dependable, and can easily last for 15-20 years. However, the 4runner does not have a diesel engine and has worse MPG than the EcoDiesel.

Can anyone give me any input on the reliability of the EcoDiesel for the 2015's and up models?

29000 miles on our 2014 JGC Overland EcoDiesel, bought February 2014.
Runs like a champ. Had one recall for a code that required a replacement SCR cat that was covered under warranty. No issues since.

Uses no oil between changes, quiet and comfortable cabin, minimal diesel noise. Sounds more like a GDI motor than a diesel!

Average 25mpg with 30+ seen on the highway and get 15/16 towing a Travel Trailer.

Very pleased with the purchase, never regretted it.

36k on mine and I average 26-28 mpg mixed, 30+ highway mpg, and 18-20 mpg towing. I have friends who tow with 4 Runners and they get low teens even with open trailer. Decent rigs but gas hogs.

I considered 4-Runner at one time, but poor MPG (don't believe Toyota figures ask the owners) and poor interiors and ugly exteriors on 2015+ Toyotas was enough to drive me away from it.

Nevertheless, It is a tough vehicle though and some advantage of body on ladder chassis, but that also makes it slightly unsafe in accidents and one of the cause for poor MPG.

I have 2016 Eco-diesel with about 2k miles on it, so far away from confirming on reliability, but I did check forums including this one and seemed like the issues were sorted out in 2015 and GC has been pretty reliable since then.

Re: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Trailhawk vs 2016/17 Toyota 4runner Trail Edit

40,000 + miles, averaging over 28 mpg (today showing 28.9 mpg: mostly highway miles) in a 2014 Limited Ecodiesel Off Road Adventure II. Only issue was cat converter replacement at less than 30,000 miles under warranty. Nicest vehicle I've ever owned. Did purchase the Maxcare extended warranty from Zeigler, tho, just in case. I bought when Shannon, V-tail, etc., bought, but must have been later off the line than theirs because I haven't (yet) suffered the issues they did.

I stopped by the dealer the other day to see if they could order an EcoDiesel Trailhawk. They check the order bank and said nada.

"Late availability" according to the 2017 thread. I think I read October somewhere.

That's pretty good mileage. I got around 30-32 mpg with everything stock but now running larger all-terrain tires and the GDE tune and average around 24.5. I drive pretty hard everywhere though

50k on my 14 overland, no issues. Took it to moab this past easter. It did very well on the trails. biggest problem is needing to brake in 4 low because of the torque.

Re: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Trailhawk vs 2016/17 Toyota 4runner Trail Edit

66,500 miles on my 2014, June build. Zero problems or warranty issues, other than the SCR recall. Zero oil consumption and the improved availability of non-oem oil filters and now the ability to use less expensive but better oil has lowered the cost of maintaince by almost 3/4. On my second set of tires and wiper blades. Fuel economy has been a steady 26.8 combined average. Can get well over 31mpg if I cruise at 55mph(that is 770 bladder-busting miles). Adding a GDE tune next week, added a 50mm lift and 32.1" tires earlier last winter. Mine is a coil car, non-quadra lift.

I gave serious consideration to the 4Runner prior to this purchase. Had the ability to test-run a pre-production TRD pro, and while I loved the cavernous interior compared to the WK2, the abysmal fuel economy and the antiquated 4.0V6 had me seeking better options. The interior of the JGC is light years ahead of the 4Runner, and the current exterior styling of the nose is either love it or hate it.
