Add on towing mirrors

I'm going to be buying a travel trailer in the near future. Can any of you towing with the JGC recommend a good brand of towing mirrors that fit the JGC mirrors correctly.

Looking to keep vibration to a minimum, and not having to keep adjusting & retightening.

I really don't want the kind with the support arm that hits the lower door.

Thanks Wireman

Re: Add on towing mirrors

I bought JR towing mirrors and love them. I've put several thousand miles on and have not had any issues.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

Been towing for the past two years using Milenco Aero 2 mirrors. Since I haven't used any others I can't make comparisons but I am fairly satisfied with them. They go on and off easily and I always take them off for non -towing driving. One problem I had (easily solved) was in warm weather the plastic clamps that fasten to the original mirror housing would loosen up and one almost came completely off at 65 mph. The wife made a good catch. Anyway I was able to add a little tab to the bracket which has since prevented this from happening again. I like that they don't have the arm that rests on the door. If you need more info I can take pix and describe how I modified these for the better. Good Luck.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

We went with the Milenco Grand Aero's. Had them on our JGC Overland for over 11000 miles and the only issue was a large bird strike that knocked the driver side mirror off. Fortunately, we went back and found it in one piece although the mirror had cracks all over it but we could still use it!

Re: Add on towing mirrors

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'm a little surprised that all of you have a mirror that clamps to the OE mirror with just the 2 clamps.

I have seen some tow mirrors on the net that have straps that wrap around the back of the mirror. I would think that that type would be more secure.

I guess real world experience counts. Did anyone try the strap type first B4 buying something different? Wireman

I didn't want a strap that could vibrate and chafe the paint. I bought these at the recommendation of a vendor at a local RV show. He had both types and liked this one better.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

Wireman,

Didn't want straps....ugly and more stuff against the paintwork. Can't say enough good things about the Milenco's, they've held on for coming on 2 years so far with only one incident (the bird strike!). Well constructed, tough and spares are easy to come by !

Re: Add on towing mirrors

Had the same issue with loosening clamps. Used JR mirrors, but had to basically remount one or both at some point each day of an 8 day trip. Loved the view, they did help, but had to fuss them with too much. Eventually lost one in urban traffic, urban roads, urban vibration. By the time I got stopped and back to it another car smashed it, blowing a tire. I wasn't their favorite out of towner, to say the least.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

Don't have any yet. Returned from my annual sojourn mid Nov. Keeping my eyes out for a good solution, maybe even a good mounting grip fix for JR's.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

I drove 14,000 miles towing an Airstream with my 2015 JGC Summit Eco Diesel and used Millenco mirrors that were held on by two screw connectors. They worked great and were rock steady at speeds up to 70 mph, though I usually stay well below that. The mirrors did not contact any painted surface and made no marks on my Jeep's mirrors. I was able to use all electric mirror adjustments without interference EXCEPT retraction the mirrors. Even this probably can be done depending on your mirror adjustment and if front windows are rolled down.

I did buy extra screw clips in case I broke or lost one, but that did not occur. I did drop a mirror and cracked the glass. I was able to purchase a replacement for under $30 including shipping. It took about two weeks as the company ships from the UK. No problem ordering online with a credit card.

Re: Add on towing mirrors

I was out looking at the JGC mirrors. For those using the screw type connectors, did you mount the mirrors on the top lip or bottom lip of the factory mirrors?

On the top lip, it seems that the top & bottom edges are not quite parallel which may or may not let the mount stay secure. The bottom lip looks like the edges are parallel and may be a more secure mounting position.

So, is there a reason you mount your mirrors at either the top or bottom.

I can't tell how the clamp mating surfaces look from the pictures. Am I over thinking this?
