I know many of you have wondered what the AFE intake sounds like on our Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. Here is short video I took last night. It does sound much better in person. What you do not here in the video is the occasional whistle sound that you get when driving and releasing the throttle.

Yup, sounds like mine. I'm not a huge fan of the "chuf chuf chuf" sound when you let off the go pedal in the video. I could be mistaken, but sounds a little like surge to me. I never hear that sound driving around though.

I wish you would've rev'd it to about 2k and hammered down though while shooting video. The ecodiesel is surprisingly quick off the line. I have no doubt the 5k lb Jeep would spank my VW Golf from 0-60'.

Turbo Diesels most definitely can surge. Both at WOT while the turbo is ramping up, and when suddenly getting off the throttle after a WOT event. I've experienced surge both by sound and watching it in logs and on gages while getting my TDI tuned.

I never hear the surge while driving around either. Just did it when doing the brake boosting.

So after reading a few online articles, I've learned that apparently diesels can surge but it is pretty rare and only if the turbo is improperly sized, if there are intake blockages, or the venting isn't routed back to the ambient intake piping. Basically just a temporary overboost condition. Just shouldn't happen in a modern stock diesel engine not under load. Really wonder what is happening to your vehicle, and if that is happening to ours, too.

Edit: If you are brake boosting, then I think your are really doing it under severe load, and maybe that is why you are getting the surges.

On our stock boost levels, I doubt it does much if anything for hp. If it does give 5hp, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

It only surged during this filming. I never do this and I just did it so others can hear what it sounds like as many have wondered on the GC forums. I would also like to note that since our GC's are so well insulated vs the Ram, you can barely hear it at all with the windows up and the radio on very low.

Thanks for taking the time to post that video. Regardless of the waste gate noise or whatever that chuffing sound is, I think the turbo whine would bug me. I purposely got a Volant enclosed CAI for a Ford V8 truck that I had just to keep it a bit quieter; just my preference. The mufflers are coming off so I'll have a nice sound along with known performance. I suspect Banks or someone that makes a closed box CAI for the Ram will make one for the JGC.

As an aside, I'm in the Memphis area and have found that the closest 4-wheel dyno is in Nashville. Anyone know of any closer?

Our GC's are so well insulated that once the windows are shut, you can hardly hear it at all. You want to hear the intake, roll down the window, tired of hearing it, roll up the windows or turn up the radio. I could never get tired of it. Then again, I love the sound of turbos.
