AFE oil filter

Has anybody tried out the aFe oil filter? Tried to search for it in the forums and I keep getting an error message.

I've tried it. Didn't notice anything special, but it is cheaper than OEM and just as good. I've wound up going with the MAHLE oil filter. Cheaper and not made in China or Korea. MAHLE makes theirs in Bulgaria and I talked with the engineers that stand behind the design.

Re: AFE oil filter

I'm on my second aFe Proguard oil filter. I put 10,000 miles on the first one and it looked no different than the Mopar filters I'd used previously so I'm now 5,000 miles into the second aFe.

I tried a Mahle filter as well, but found them to be different than the OEM Mopar filter. In the picture I provide, the OEM is on the left and the Mahle is on the right. Placement of the o-ring is incorrect on the Mahle.

The placement of the o ring is irrelevant for the Jeep. Only the RAM version requires it to be higher up on the neck. The Mahler filter is designed off the OEM filter that the Jeep's left the factory with. Because of the irrelevant placement of the o ring, Chrysler consolidated stock and revised the part number to be the same for both the RAM and Jeep. It seats just the same in the Jeep housing.

That was conveyed to me from the MAHLE engineers in Germany and Chrysler Enhanced customer satisfaction. I was just as wary because of the different heights on the neck for the smaller o ring. There is something with oil pressure on the RAM model that is different than the Jeep.

MAHLE has the warranty to back up their products as well. I'm confident in it and haven't had any issues since. I understand the hesitation though.

I suspect it's the drainback valve at the base of the filter housing. Ram has it, Jeep doesn't.

I put in my aFe oil filter about 1500 miles ago. Initial impression was that it was slightly higher quality than OEM. I'll be checking the pleats for any deformation when I change it at the next 10K mile interval. The OEM pleats had some slight deformation when I changed it around 9600 miles.

Re: AFE oil filter

First filters I purchased MOPAR by the way looked just like the Mahle so those were the first and are now superseded to work for the Ram and the Jeep.

When I pulled out my aFe oil filter after 9984 miles of service, there was no deformation. Aside from being black, it still looked the same as when I put it in. It held up really well. The oil analysis on the aFe oil filter came back with the identical low number for insolubles as the OEM filter, so it's filtering just as well.

Re: AFE oil filter

Oh, and you can get a 4-pack of the aFe oil filters for around $60 on Amazon, so they've come down in price quite a bit.
