Amazing Range

Well I pushed it a bit further than my wife would like, but managed to go from Buena Vista, CO to Oklahoma City, OK on one tank of diesel. 682 miles on the odometer. I've never owned a vehicle that provides this level of comfort and performance and provides terrific range.

What I like is the fact that if my wife wants to go visit my daughter 150 miles away, I don't have to run and fill it up before she goes...
If it's around half a tank, I just tell her to go...She goes, runs around while she is there, comes back and still has fuel. Couldn't do that in her car !!
The down side is she also has more room to haul shopping junk home !

It had a little over 2 gallons left in the tank, so another 40-60 miles. Sure this was all downhill, 7000' elevation drop, but it was hills the whole way. I also had a hitch carrier hanging out the back full of camping and fishing equipment. I suspect this contributed to a little drag and minor fuel mileage loss. If it gets better after 20K, I guess I need to go do some more driving!

Yea, I can see 700+ miles per tank too. I was getting 30+ mpg on my 1200 trip recently with only 1400 miles on the GC when I was done.

This is my first diesel, and what really surprises me is the low end torque. I am still learning to carefully modulate the throttle off the stop lights to avoid whiplash.

I love the range - that was one reason I wanted the CRD engine. To date the farthest I've gone in one stretch is from Las Vegas NV to home. Only 550 miles, easy-peasy.

One day I'll take a 4-day weekend to really stretch its legs. I think I can get to Salt Lake City, a bladder-busting 800 miles away, on one tankful. I'll buy and bring a jerry can of diesel with me though, for insurance. Out there in the wide open west it can be 75 miles between diesel stations, and sometimes more.

My thought for the outbound leg is to drive at the speed limit to see if I can get 800+ miles on a tankful, and then on the return I'll drive my usual 80-90+ mph (again, that's out in the wide open west) and see what the operating range is at that speed. That will give me my min and max operating ranges for a tankful.

Sure I can do the math to derive those numbers, but I want to get out there and _DO_ it, for real.

I filled up 2 days ago, a paltry 26.28mpg, but the low fuel light just lit and my GC took 20.93 gallons. Isn't the tank 24.5 gallons?

I haven't topped off one but yet on this vehicle. I slow the pump down the last 5 gallons maybe on the slowest speed and just let it shut off. Is anybody topping off? For the low fuel light to come on with over 3.5 gallons left seems a little early to me. That's 100 miles of range!

Diesel (~ 100 degrees F) has a much higher flash point (much safer) than gasoline (-45 degrees F) - flash point is where the fuel evaporates to create combustible concentrations of vapor.

Went to the Upper Peninsula, MI; long day of driving Wisconsin back roads, but right in the jeeps sweet spot of 45-60mph. 330miles covered 32.9 on EVIC and 32.9 mpg on calculator. Just cracked 3/4 tank, impressive.
