Question Any scarcity in the diesels yet?

We already bought our '15 JGC ecodiesel, so this is just more out of curiosity than anything else.

The first sales guy we visited swore up and down that if we didn't buy a 3.0L ecodiesel fast, we would not be able to find them later since the government was buying up all the manufacturing capacity for the 3.0L diesel engines used by the JGC. Of course, he wanted to sell us one of his, fast.

We couldn't come to terms with him on price, so we moved on and purchased elsewhere.

His comment got me thinking, though.

I did some research and came up with these two little guys:

The Polaris Dagor
The Boeing Phantom Badger

Both use the VM Motori 3.0L diesel engine we have in our JGC and both are ramping up production as they come under contract with their customers (governments). It's speculation based on specs that they're using this engine on the Dagor and confirmed fact on the Badger.

So, how realistic was that sales guy's comment? Creedence or cretin?

Any shortages out there for diesel JGC?

By my count, there were about 2% of the vehicles on the Jeep dealer lots in the Pacific Northwest that were diesel JGC in mid-January 2015, but it didn't really look like a shortage - just a niche.

Re: Any scarcity in the diesels yet?

We just purchased our JGC ecodiesel this evening 2/9/15.

2014 limited version 4X2.

Was told that most of the 3 liter ecodiesel production was going into the Ram to keep up with demand.

Pretty scarce except in Ram here in North Texas.

You couldn't come to terms on the price? Did you low ball them or were they not coming down enough off the sticker?

$5K over MSRP on a vehicle that didn't match what we wanted. He came down to MSRP on another one that still didn't match what we wanted. We got him down a little below MSRP on yet another vehicle that was closer to what we wanted, but not quite.

I was looking to pay 5-7% less than MSRP, but he couldn't/wouldn't go there.

Ended up paying about 7.5% off MSRP for a vehicle that was almost exactly what we wanted. We didn't want lux II, but couldn't find a Limited ORA II without it unless it was the wrong colors. Ended up with the right colors and lux II, but it was such a good deal we decided we could live with lux II.

Re: Any scarcity in the diesels yet?

To answer you question, there aren't a lot of them around. But I certainly wouldn't call them scarce.

The post about the Ram's getting all the 3.0's is correct. That's why the 2015's were delayed so severely.

Again, that leads to the fact that there aren't a lot of them around. I think the sticker really scared people off. Also, given dealer's lack of desire to discount them certainly scared others off.

Me? I worked with half a dozen dealers to get what I wanted for the price I wanted.

In closing, however, if you do a search of used diesel JGC's on autotrader, you'll find that there are quite a few that are relatively cheap. Not sure the secondary market's there for these yet.

Koons in Va has 10 of them sitting on the lot for 7% under invoice.

Re: Any scarcity in the diesels yet?

Yikes! Never pay MSRP. I tried once on a Mustang Convertible to get a 2011 the day or (2) after the vehicle was dropped off the truck at the Dealer. They didn't even have the protective stuff off the car from hauling. It was back in the detail shop waiting to be prepped for the showroom floor. They would only come down to MSRP and not a dime more and it would be a few days before I could take it home. I passed on the deal. Bought a 2010 the CEO of a different dealership drove to his favorite golf course and drove his clients out for lunch with every now and then instead. Pays to shop around.

There are definitely pockets here and there with availability. Here in the rural Pacific NW, we're real fond of our turbo diesels, but a lot of the dealers are in major metro areas that shun diesel and off-road packages. There was a dealer in northern Idaho that had like 30 on the lot, but they were all dark exterior and black interior, which we try to avoid since we frequent desert areas and live in a very sunny/hot area ourselves (south eastern WA).

Re: Any scarcity in the diesels yet?

Join Treadlightly ($100 fee) have to wait 30 days to get in program. It's an off road conservation program where you can get employee pricing to negotiate from (1% below invoice). There's also a TX dealer who can get you a good price but I got mine from Woodhouse in Omaha, NE (they are one of the largest dealers in the country with customers on east, west coast who buy exclusively from them) for the same price as the TX can do. PM me and I can send his info if he's much closer to you.

I looked at AT to see where used prices were and seems like depreciation was right on ~25c/mile. The same metric used in my 2014 CRD lease. I think they are pretty rate outside of this forum... I've only seen one other JGC CRD in Northern NJ.
