So, they finally put a "real" shifter back in the Jeep - a lever that actually sits in a different position for each gear.
Like it should.
Before I go tearing apart my console to see how the '14 unit attaches...has anyone tried, or checked to see if a '16 shifter is plug-n-play in an earlier WK2?
I would *suspect* it'll interchange - you'll need a bezel, and the shifter itself, but other than that I would think the body harnesses would be the same, the shifter would (should?) use the same electrical connector...
Anyone have a '16 they'd be willing to open up, and photo the connectors for the new style shifter?
I have had to make sure the shifter was in the proper mode as well. Consumer Reports calls this shifter finicky and I think that is a good description.
However the driver is responsible for making sure the car is in the proper mode. I think we are so used to pulling the shifter into the lowest position and that is drive in most cars (some are in low then) that we get lazy and don't look go by tactical feel.
I do think the 16 shifter would be a great improvement but I have learned from flying and driving that the axion trust but verify holds for our JGC...
I agree with you, fun2drive. Even after 2.5 years of ownership, this shifter is finicky in ways a normal shifter never is. I have never had to "fight" with a shifter on any other vehicle; conversely, quickly throwing the transmission from D to R is quite difficult on this Jeep, with the gear often ending up as N or P. Also, sometimes the shifter starkly refuses to shift into P no matter how long it is pressed forward and successful shifting into P requires releasing the shifter and trying again. My guess is that this aspect is related to the rollaways some drivers have experienced.
This shifter paradigm also lacks the benefit of muscle memory, as you noted. The tasks I described as problematic with this shifter are simpler with a normal shifter thanks to the engagement of the cerebellum/proprioception.
Simply put: I experience zero benefit from this idiosyncratic shifter, but I do experience drawbacks. The 2016 redesign appears to be a significant improvement.
Yes! Although I have always been careful, I have found myself almost getting out of the car while in Reverse. Without thinking too much about it, quickly shifting into what you think is Park and hitting the ignition button quickly( if in gear this does not shut down the engine) there is a clear danger of leaving the engine running and in Reverse.

Precisely. This is the "fighting" scenario I referred to. In certain circumstances the shifter will move forward but refuse to shift into P until it is released and pushed again.
I've had the scenario you describe happen to me when I was in a serious rush. I was additionally protected because I absolutely always use the parking brake.
Just went from the 14 to the 16, and love the new shifter. Old one was finicky. After the learning curve, was easy to use, but still had to fiddle with it almost every time I used it. Happy now.
My 5 series with the same transmission had a more complicated shifter that was more akin to a space joystick. I got used to it but it was less intuitive than the Chrysler product. Park is a separate button (on the top) so there was never any risk of trying to get to 'P' but only making it to 'R' like ours has. This is out of a 7 series but same deal.
I have a '14 Overland with 30k miles. I did a three point turn yesterday and was glad a semi wasn't coming down the road towards me. Stupid shifter. Can't imagine coming down Black Bear Pass in Telluride using this shifter. Yaaaa-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo… Love the vehicle though.
If you look at his sig he is from australia , and the export models all had power folding mirrors. In US and Canada we only have the power folding mirrors on overland and summit
