Anybody know what our temperature gauge means?

Anybody know what our EcoDiesel temperature gauge is trying to tell us? What temp is the first mark, for example? Can't seem to find this anywhere in the manual. Love how the manual just says that any temperature in the normal range indicates that the engine cooling system is operating satisfactorily.

Same here with the temps. When towing in the mountains at high elevations, I have seen the factory temp gauge hug the red zone.

That equates to about 240 degree water temp.

With the scan gauge I also monitor the EGT which have been as high as 1500 degrees when towing.

Wish FCA would have put those values in the driver info display like they did trans temp and oil temp. 2 of the most important parameters to watch in the ECO, especially when towing.

The number tracks pretty close to the oil temperature, except under extreme conditions where oil temperature has spiked from a recent high load. The coolant flows through the oil cooler and the oil temperature in the dash is from a sensor just after the oil cooler.

When my coolant temperature hangs around the middle, oil temps are around 206-210F.

The thermostat starts opening at 208F, which is typically calibrated to sit in the middle of the coolant temperature gauge. H is something like 265F.

Like virtually most cars these days unless you use a scan tool for OBDII you will never really know what the actual temperature is since it is buffered. This was done to keep owners from freaking out and running to the dealer.
A lot of trucks still have actual gauges but few cars. My BMW has oil temp only no coolant gauge what so ever.
