Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

I know this thread is a couple of months old already but I couldn't find a newer discussion on this very topic.

After dealing with all the P20EE issues (again this month) and having the new SCR installed, I came across this troubling new issue this weekend.

After towing my racecar trailer back from Dallas to Austin and seeing the temperature gauge behave erratically I became concerned I was running low on coolant. Basically it behaved like the thermostat was becoming stuck and unstuck constantly. After pulling over for a long lunch break and letting the engine cool down, I was surprised to find the coolant expansion tank lined with this brown sludge! Since my water temp was elevated but not in the danger zone and my oil temps were in the normal range, I decided to make the rest of the trip home slowly and cautiously.

After reading through this thread and a similar one on the Ram 1500 diesel forum, I realize how serious this issue actually is now. I'm sure I have this sludge circulating through the radiator, coolant lines, heater core, etc. now and probably even in the water jackets in the block!

I know this thread was focused on the mixing of HOAT and OAT coolant types, but the Ram 1500 guys seem to believe the problem is with oil/coolant intermix in the heat exchanger aka oil cooler. Black Sludge in Coolant - Page 32

I absolutely love this thing but I'm getting to my wits end with all the reliability and quality issues I've dealt with over the last 1.5 years and 19k mi.

Back to the dealer for a heart to heart tomorrow. I feel like I should insist on a new motor because this kind of thing can be a kiss of death for a motor if the water jackets are compromised.

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

I had the oil/water cooler leak, oil to water, in my 06 Merc engine diesel GC. Lots of oil sludge and fixed with a cheapish $400 new cooler. Used a citrus based degreaser to wash oil out of coolant system and all worked well after. When these coolers fail they can let all oil into water jacket in 5 mins with no oil left in engine or they can take months to fail… Haven't heard this happening to current model… Does it have a water/oil cooler like most engines do nowadays?

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

If you go to the link I posted the Ram 1500 Diesel guys seem to have it pegged that the oil/water heat exchanger is the culprit for this issue. They have the same powertrain that we do in the GC Ecodiesel. According to the info shared in that thread, the oil cooler was a new design specific for the U.S. market 3.0Ls, the reason for which I'm not exactly sure.

While I can see both of these issues potentially being at the root of the problem, my feeling is that the oil cooler problem makes the most sense.

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

Checked under my coolant cap today and noticed this? Can anyone provide info on what this sludge looking stuff is?? I see that my 2014 JGC requires purple OAT coolant and this doesn't look purple to me. Should I pay the dealership to flush it out and fill with the purple stuff which will cost $150. I've never had any service done to the coolant so I dont know what caused this or how it got in there??

Not sure exactly what it is (contaminated coolant from mixing types?)...

You definitely should flush it and replace with the proper ($$) purple coolant. If that is not something you are comfortable doing by yourself, I would get it done at the dealership.

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

Alright, I'll try the flush and fill, hopefully it doesn't return, still don't know why it happened in the first place??

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

That sure doesn't look like healthy condensation haha anyone else have pictures of condensation like this in their JGC?

Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

Alright well I may still go to the dealership and have them change it to the purple OAT coolant, I just dont want to waste $150 if I dont have to and everything is fine.

It's casting and Nd the dealership should be flushing it under warranty. This is the Ecodiesel area, not Pentstar or HEMI. The Italian manufacturing facility did not flush the engine blocks out enough when they made these engines because they rushed. Poor QA. I had to have mine flushed 13 times and it still hasn't gotten all of it. There is some still in the heater core and radiator. I'm debating on them replacing them both under warranty, but I'm probably going to go with the Sinister Diesel coolant filter designed for the 6.4 Ford Power stroke instead because it'll never be the same if I have both of those replaced.

Angry Re: Brown sludge scum in coolant bottle.

I've got the same problem. Had the car since new, regularly serviced and never any coolant added. Just had the 50K Service done, and mentioned the sludge in the bottle as I was having to take the cap off to check the level. It's been that way for over 20K, I just never mentioned it on services, and obviously never picked up on services neither.
Was told it need a full flush and coolant replacement. Not bad seeing it's suppose to be good for 120,000km or 5 years. Asked for replacement under warranty, but NO, it's a service item and we don't know what you've added to it.
Rang up Chrysler, not much better. Was told they'd pay for it if there was a problem in the cooling system. Not happy.
Went to another Jeep specialist who looked at it for me, and took a sample. It was Orangey/Brown with specs in it, then he showed me a new bottle of coolant, pinky/purple.........Not the same, and it's not good.
Still contemplating the next step, but in the end, it needs to be flushed and replaced.
