Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

I am now trying to decide if I should get the JGC Overland or Summit.

FCA Canada have a great deal right now on a no- charge upgrade to the EcoDiesel

I am leaning towards the Summit due to the extra features including the adaptive headlights.

What is interesting is that the Summit actually has 275mm ground clearance vs 264 mm for the Overland.

Approach angle however is much better on the Overland at 29.8 degrees vs only 23.5 for the Summit.

http://cdn.dealereprocess.com/cdn/br...ndcherokee.pdf

Is there any difference other than the 18” wheels with the Overland Off-Road Adventure Group II and the Summit Skid Plate Package?

Also wondering if the Tow Hooks can be added to the Summit?

The price difference quoted by the dealer is less than $1500 when the Overland is load with HK stereo, Advanced warning/Adaptive Cruise package and Blind Spot package and Summit has Skid Plate Group.

Last wondering if I could later add the Overland cowling under the front bumper to the Summit as I understand they are easily remove.

Any comments appreciated before I spend the $75K with taxes etc.

Thanks

I debated between the two and went overland. Depends what look you are going for.

Around the audio system, perhaps nookie will chime in he is also up here and went from a summit to overland. At some point I may swap in some aftermarket speakers, lots of info on that subject here.

I vote Overland...bit I'm biased. LOL
I do think the Summit is more geared towards luxury, while Overland is more utility with lots of lux features. The diff in look is personal preference. I say you won't be disappointed with the Overland.

Re: Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

I am considering a new G.C. (2015 or 2016) and am deciding between the same two models as well... (According to Wk2Jeep website, 2016 sales info will be available Sept. 1 but this site says Nov/Dec so not sure who is correct?? I haven't talked to a Ontario dealer yet but from what I gather, they are offering no charge for the ecodiesel option ($5000 value)????

I view the choice between the Overland and Summit as mostly personal taste/design issues... the Summit appears to be the bling, bling of the G. C.... the extra fancy leather, more sound speakers, extra chrome (strip at the back, front grill), chrome wheels standard, sound insulation (acoustic windshield and active noise cancellation), and so on... here is the list over and above the Overland...
Natura Plus Leather-faced seating
20-inch full polished Satin aluminum wheels
Acoustic windshield and 2nd-row glass
Active noise cancellation
Adaptive bi-xenon HID headlamps
Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Forward Collision Warning with Mitigation8
Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-path Detection8
Body-colour grille with bright inserts
Matte wood accents
Harman/kardon® 19-speaker audio system with 825-watt amplifier
Headlamp washers
Illuminated door sills
Park-Sense® Front and Rear Park Assist Systems8
Premium suede-like headliner
Berber carpet mat for the rear cargo area

The Overland has the more tradional Jeep attire, tow hooks at front, less bling at rear (no chrome strip), no chrome front grill between slots, and aluminum rims vs chromed out ones....

You might want to test drive both and see if the acoustic windshield and noise cancellation makes any difference to the ride and if 19 speakers means a lot to you or not,... then it is personal preference with respect to looks.... as for myself, I am leaning towards the Overland look, but I owned several previous Overlands (when Summits were not even available so perhaps I am biased that way)...

tow hooks are not available for the Summit, just the skid plate package... and although the ground clearance is very slightly higher for the Summit (264mm or 10.4" for Overland vs 275mm or 10.8" for Summit), the approach angle is drastically different for these two models (29.8 Overland vs 23.5 summit) which makes a big difference...(Definition: Starting from level ground, this is the degree of slope a vehicle can approach without scraping or hitting the front undercarriage. It's a great indication of the ability to navigate severe off-road terrain like boulders and logs. A short front overhang produces high angles of approach, thus increasing off-road ability).

Also, the off road group II is available for Overland only (not Summit) including 18 rims and 18 on/off road tires plus skid plates if you wish to go that route instead of the 20" tires/rims which come standard.

let us know what choice you make... and what other vehicles, if any, you are/were contemplating....

From the reviews I have read to date, the two main issues I hear about most often are 1) the italian ecodiesel is noisier with more vibration than German diesels (Mercedes ML, Audi) (I might notice this more than others since I have owned the Jeep (08) when it had a Mercedes diesel engine and also an ML 350 diesel)... no changes that I know of for 2016 though... perhaps the two forms of sound insulation on the Summit helps with this a little????...

2) the gear shift is not gated (like in older previous models) and so complaints have arisen about the ease of shifting and finding reverse/Park, etc.... apparently, the shifter will have some changes in the 2016 model

good luck in your purchase!

Re: Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

I think tow hooks can be added if you punch out the appropriate areas on the summit lower grill. I don't go off-roading much, but tow hooks come in handy when you need to pull someone out of a snow drift (or get pulled out.)

Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

If i had to start from Zero I would get a Summit with the Hemi V8.

Facias cannot be changed between overland and summit

You can add tow hooks to the Summit, takes half a day and needs to be hot outside as lots of bending and pulling is required on the bumper plastic parts of the lower facia (if you don't want to remove the bumper)

The HK is great, you can get close with speaker upgrades in the overland but the real limiting factor is the headunit with the alpine system. Some have reported the HK in the overland does not sound as good as HK in the summit.

Adaptive headlights I did not find usefull on summit or notice it missing in my OvL

If you're paying 75K tax in you're paying too much.

Re: Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

My Summit with Ecodiesel will be ready for pickup tomorrow subject to it being as new, dealer has to bring in, Grand Crystal metallic with black interior.

No real colour choice in BC on Summit with diesel, skid plate package and no PREMIUM PLUS APPEARANCE GROUP .

Pretty happy with choice and figure if I go for a serious 4 wheeling weekend I can take the 20 minutes to remove lower front facsia.

Pretty happy with deal.

Thanks for all tips, advice and recommendation, much appreciated.

Re: Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

I went with Limited, I now wish I had at least went with a base Overland. If you plan to keep it more than 5 years I would go with Summit. You have to be able to like it over that time frame knowing you left no options behind. Less than 5 years, consider a lesser option overland that won't have as much depreciation.

It appears this VM engine will carry over to the next model GC, possibly with a power upgrade. In other words I have no problem hanging onto this jeep for some time.

I'm reading the next audi V6 TDI is expected to be 350hp with electric turbocharger (s)?

Re: Canadian Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel - Overland or Summit?

I bought an overland at the end of May and love it (got the diesel at nc). The tow hooks are excellent as tie down points too for things like canoes. I got the adaptive cruise and love it. The only thing I got that I didn't want was the CD player. I paid $58k plus tax , equating to $65.5k (although because I had a trade, in reality I paid $44k all in). It was an $11,700 discount. A little over 9000 km already and zero issues. Fantastic mileage-I've had as little as 7 l/100 km on a 1000 km drive including stop and go through toronto, and speeds up to 130 k.
