Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Well, it happened to me after everything was going so well....

Walked outside this morning about 0450 and started the Jeep after unplugging the block heater. Outside temp was 18F. Cranked right up, but with a new addition to the menu. "Service Electronic Throttle Control" and check engine light. 872 miles on the odo.

I sat there pondering my options and reviewed the previous thread on this topic. Wound up trying to restart a few times. No bueno. Went into reverse just fine, but the only forward gear that I could achieve was 3rd.

Parked it and called roadside assistance, they came and picked it up about 0730. I called the dealership to let them know that it was inbound. I haven't purchased the MaxCare yet (I got a quote from Ziegler yesterday, a little irony there) but the dealership went ahead and got me a rental with no prompting whatsoever. We have purchased multiple vehicles from them due to their good sales and service, so I have no fears on that end.

I'll let you guys know what codes it threw and the resolution of the issue. I suspect that it will be similar to the other gent's issue with the DEF heater relay or a wiring harness issue.

And there I was bragging to my wife about how nice a vehicle it is
I'm sure it'll all get sorted out.

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

I'm wondering how many times we'll see threads like this before people stop using the block heaters until Jeep releases a viable fix.

Ironically, I've seen no threads from people who couldn't start due to cold, and not plugging in.

I've personally never used the block heater, and we've had record cold up here in the NE. Then again, it's not the -30+ below some have seen this season.

Good luck, regardless!

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

I had assumed that the block heater thing was coincidence and that this would continue on into summer but with no further mention of the block heaters people were no longer using. Is there some information connecting the two or has this not happened to people who don't use it? I had been plugging in on cold nights for the quicker warm up...

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Yeah, I figured that I was safe. I used the block heater a few times without issue and then got smacked this morning.

We'll see I guess. No updates from the dealer today. I'm in a 200 as a rental. Ugh. What a step down.

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Update

Got the Jeep back on Monday evening with 58 more miles on it. Codes were TCM 1424 and PCM 24C2. They cleared the codes and "performed circuit reconfiguration" which sounds like a hard reset.

No issues this week, but I haven't tried to use the block heater either.

Who knows? Pretty irritating not being able to use the block heater with impunity.

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Out of curiosity, what's the build date on your JGC?

Not sure what "circuit reconfiguration" might be. Let's hope they re-seated every connector on those circuits and that takes care of things. Good luck!

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Mine was built in January 2014. We'll see if any issue resurfaces. Otherwise, it's been a great vehicle to drive.

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

Any more info on this? Same thing happened to me tonight. Flashing MIL, stuck in third and shaking. I was a quarter mile from my house so I got back home and let it sit. I turned the jeep back on and it was shifting hard into gear and engine light on. I unplugged the battery and light is off and having no problem shifting. Could it be a computer issue?

Re: Check engine light/stuck in 3rd gear

I've had this several times, in fact it was the initial MIL I ever had. at about 22k miles. Now at about 30k just had it again.

Most recently I was pulling a light trailer and cruising along on I-95, 400 miles from home, when the "shift throttle control" warning message and MIL came on. We were stuck in 8th gear and cruising along about 70 mph. Cruise control and paddle shifters stopped working. Luckily I knew there was an easy exit rest area about 12 miles ahead and WAZE said no traffic, so we kept on going. Pulled off, followed the owner's manual protocol (see Owners Manual, p. 418 "Transmission Limp Mode Home"), restarted, and then we were stuck in 3rd gear. Decided that we were only about 60 miles from destination and vacation, kept on going. After about ten miles going 40, getting passed by big trucks going about 70, and watching the oil temperature climb to about 230, decided to pull off and find a dealer. Idled to cool down, turned it off, spent about ten minutes trying to talk a local dealer into reflashing me despite that his diesel guy was off and they were closing in twenty minutes, waited ten minutes, and restarted....voila all warning lights gone. Cruised to destination, spent a week on vacation, and drove home with no problems (other than the usual multiple warning lights...with no degredation in performance).

Unfortunately I didn't have my OBD reader so dont' know if it threw off any codes.

Recently I was reviewing a forum and somebody who was familiar with my main OBD code (P-1297) said there had been reports that a loose alternator wire was causing intermittent faults. Given that I've had the following fault codes in the past two weeks, all of which have vanished with no action, I'm wondering if I have a bad ECU or a loose wire somewhere: shift throttle control, check brakes, check ABS, MIL, and water in fuel.
