That the dealer replaced filter is still in one piece when I checked yesterday.
Yes, my first OEM air filter replacement still fine too after over a year and 17,000 km on that new OEM filter.

I don't trust aFe products, based on their published specs. I'm willing to shrug about having to change my first OEM filter early last year, but now I perceive no reason to risk using an aFe product that won't protect the engine as well as a stock air filter.

Looks like Chrysler got that quality control issue sorted out (either that, or I am better about not damaging the filter gasket than the factory installers).

I only have 900 miles on my third one and it is already starting to tear in the corner. I will see how it looks after my holiday travel plans this week.

I'll do a UOA at 10k and look for abnormalities that a crappy filtration system can cause. Hopefully the pro guard 7 is as good as AFE claims.
The AFE unit looked good from the pictures, but I have not seen one in person, yet. I checked mine and sure enough, on two of the four sides it's already cracked. Not sure which I'd be more confident with, a replacement OE filter or the AFE dry?

My truck was built in January and had a little over 200 miles on it when I bought it last week; it now has a little over 500. I was really surprised when I saw that it was made by Hengst, they are a German company and I remember using their filters on my older BMW more than a couple of times.

Well I thought I had:
I went to Repco today to pick it up and they supplied a Wesfil WA 5153. It's made in PRC too. I asked why and they said the Ryco were hard to get. I'm part of an automotive buying group, so not worried about quality and it will be a spare in the event the "OEM" unit tears again until I can take it back for a further replacement.

I just went with a K&N replacement. Figured it would last longer

I am not sold on using those filters where sensitive electronic components are monitoring air flow. I also suspect that K&N does not filter the air as well as paper media does.

Re: Check your air filter

We recently had a 100 Series V8 Landcruiser in our workshop with a K & N Pod filter and about 1/2 way along the filter all the paper had disintegrated in a ring at the point where the air tube protruded into the filter. It appeared the volume of air being sucked in was shredding the paper leaving just the gauze.

Certainly not what you'd want beach driving.

Normally with a MAF I'd say dry as well, but the dry AFE is a lesser quality filter compared to the pro guard 7. I have 2k miles and no weird problems yet (like I'd expect on a VW MAF).

Re: Check your air filter

Just had the filter replaced today after 15k miles. Wife noticed a strange noise on accelerating and after troubleshooting traced the noise to the air intake. No surprise the filter was torn, so I assume it was moving in the air box to create the noise. My question is for those that had the filter replaced by dealer, did it tear again or was this a quality issue on a batch bad?

I talked to the parts guy today, and he said the part number would have changed if the filter was different. So the same crappy filter is being installed.

The Fram did not fit, I expect it was for the RAM.

I'm not comfortable with the oiled gauze filters, even the 7 layer ones, thinking that heavy equipment and trucks all use paper elements.

There are no manufacturers that I could find who make the paper filter for the 3.0 except for Baldwin, and I looked high and low for another manufacturer. If there's one out there, I couldn't find it.

Baldwin part is PA4483. No one in my area of the NW USA carried that filter in stock, and I tried many online Baldwin sales outlets with no success. I called Baldwin and they don't sell direct, so I checked the dealer locator section of their website, and a local auto parts store, Baxter Auto Parts is a Baldwin dealer. However that part is not carried there, so they had to order one direct from Baldwin. $25 delivered to the store.

I received the filter today, and upon examination it is very similar to the OEM, but different in that the paper elements are more white and it says Baldwin PA4483 and the usual "made in China". The orange rubber seems similar to OEM, but slightly more dense possibly.

I installed the filter and noted that if I set the top of the filter housing down on the filter and then tried to slide in the three tabs, it tended to grab the orange rubber and pull it while sliding. I firmly lifted the top above the orange and held it up while sliding in the tabs. That might be the cause of the tearing of the rubber as opposed to faulty manufacturing, but in any case I'll stick with the Baldwin. The fit was a perfect replacement of the OEM.

The Baxter regional rep told me that they will be stocking the PA4483 in most of their stores from now on after I explained the situation. If they're not in stock, they can be ordered and any Baldwin authorized dealer can do so also. Baxter is a NW USA based chain that is expanding into more western states.

Update: At 2500 miles on the Baldwin filter, there are absolutely no cracks, tears or distortions. These miles were at highway speeds and a few off road miles in the sand.

Keeping the fingers crossed....
