Check your air filter

All that stuff is actually pre filter man. You're fine

There is an arrow at the bottom of air box showing you that air flows into the box from the ram intake. That dust and and dirt made it's way in with the rain / regular driving. It is meant to settle there (see the small drain hole) before the air is sucked up through the filter. So if you see dust on the TOP side of the air box... Then you would want to be concerned

Yep, air comes in on the bottom which makes good sense because the heavy stuff (water, bugs, leaves) falls down before it reaches the filter.

Ah, it feels so good to be wrong.

Still. WTF is up with the filters?

Re: Check your air filter

Ditto! Thanks to this forum, I checked my AF today. Found cracks on 2 of 4 sides. Almost half way around the entire filter. Fortunately, the cracks did not extend through the entire gasket so none of the fines were found on the clean side of the housing. Gonna have a talk with my dealer.

Looks like Jeep needs to comp a whole bunch of filters but I bet they won't do that as that would make them liable for all manner of engine damage claims.

Re: Check your air filter

Checked mine, a whopping 4,000klms since the vehicle was new, cracked on all four sides,
What a PITA, and I'm hundreds of kilometres from the nearest dealer.

I used a MAF sensor safe sealant to repair my filter until I could get a new one. Basically I had to glue it back together.

Re: Check your air filter

Is there no K&N drop-in filter (or comparable) available yet aftermarket?

Re: Check your air filter

I am not aware of any other brands available, but I'm a long way from any parts suppliers at the moment anyway.
As I'm a long way from a dealer, including some unsealed (dirt) road, I think I'll try sealing it all the way round with silicone.
A fine smear and a 24 hour curing period before reinstalling should hopefully do the trick for now, I hope.

I'm not very keen on reinstalling a genuine filter at the moment anyway- it might just do the same thing.....

Re: Check your air filter

Popped mine off to check this. Still looks like new and no concerns. Novemeber build and 5600 miles. It just may be how these were installed as it is tight at the back where the tabs are on the cover. If not properly seated and then forced to get the tabs in, moving the top cover may get a hold of it and tear the lip on these. I noticed this when trying to get mine back in. Just my observation.

Went to the dealer this morning. "We normally stock them, but I sold one this past week and now we're out of stock."

Quelle surprise.

I'm ordering two online now. Maybe a spare fuel filter while I'm at it.
