Re: Check your air filter

Dom, good catch!

Mine was cracked on two full sides, but only cracked completely through the rubber on one corner like shown in Roadkill's photo. (This is where I get to pat myself on the back.) I ordered a couple filters several months ago to have on hand in case of something like this. One down one to go. Maybe I can get the dealer to replace the cracked one. I call it a defect, not normal wear.

Re: Check your air filter

I checked ours last night and luckily all is good (for now), but I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on it now thanks to this forum. Also called the dealership on the vanity visor wiring recall. I am # 84 on their list waiting for parts to be released to complete the repair. No ETA on when parts will get released.

Re: Check your air filter

Mine is cracked as well. Called the dealership, Rothrock in Allentown. Their service department sucks. None in stock and they sounded as if they didn't believe me. They tried to tell me that "the filter is designed that way". I told the guy to stop talking to me like I'm stupid and that the filter is cracked around the edges. New one is in order.

Re: Check your air filter

I changed out my air filter a month ago when I reached 20,000 miles. The old one was in good shape, no cracks or anything, but was fairly dirty (as expected). I gained 1 mpg after putting the new one in.

I am going to check it more often, say every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Not because of the issue discussed here, but because it is getting dirty quicker than I expected.

Check your air filter

Fixed mine in 30 seconds for 2 bucks. Used rubber sealant and let it dry then re install

Do NOT use a K&N....they don't filter down small enough (larger microns!).
Great for racers and folks that like to increase intake noise but not so good for us regular guys.

Lot's of info on the Internet....

Re: Check your air filter

Mine split a little, probably did it myself fighting the tabs in. Not worried about it. As long as everything is seated the lid will pinch it closed.

Any idea what is causing this? Install error at the factory?

it has to be poor materials. Mine spit all the way around. The air box is poorly designed as well. Its a real chore to get the tabs aligned in the rear before closing it.

I respectfully disagree. I've been using K&N drop-in filters in my cars for ages. One of them has 200K+ miles on it at this point, and has been on the same filter since the first filter change at ~10K miles. Never burned a drop of oil, never threw a MAF code, valvetrain is squeaky clean (judging from what I could see when I pulled the valve cover at ~150K miles to see how things were wearing).

Lots of misinformation on the Internet as well.

Re: Check your air filter

If you run in a clean environment, perhaps the K&N will not show signs of damage to the motor soon enough to matter. It is an industry fact that oiled cotton gauze filters don't perform as well as paper filters...except in having lower restriction. They just don't filter as well, which is what a filter should do.

Here is an interesting unbiased test using precise methods:
