Check your air filter

So i went into dealer today to get those transmission updates. All is good with trans now.

While i was leaving dealer i remembered i had some credit in the parts department, so i picked up an air filter.

Got home and decided to swap out the air filter. As im trying to take the filter out the air box, the rubber on filter around the filter was breaking down and i have cracks all along the edge of it. When i looked closer into it i can actually see dirt particles that made it passed the filter and into motor. Not good. Told the dealer.

Air box post filter was slightly dusted. So pissed.

Yep mine too
Seems to be common issue of parts quality

EDIT: I'm leaving this up so that others can give me the gibing I richly deserve. But if you're just glancing through quickly, note that I'm wrong (well, the filter is obviously shot, but the rest... no).

======================================

Does it count as dusting if you find part of a maple "helicopter" in the air box, post filter? Rhetorical question.

Gah. BTW, what's the point of buying a replacement if these have a defective manufacturing process? Am I going to have to plan to check this thing weekly? I'm sure that will increase the odds of improper installation or wear on the filter gasket.

Given that "plenty" of shit has gotten into the engine now, should I just plan to change the oil for the second time in 8,000 miles? Anything else to mitigate potential damage?

Special procedures for documenting this at the dealer to try to preserve warranty, should that crop up?

If my local dealer has stock, tomorrow morning I will be buying two of these POS air filters. One as the immediate replacement, and the other to swap in when the new one fails within 6 months or whatever. Have to have a backup.

All that stuff is actually pre filter man. You're fine

There is an arrow at the bottom of air box showing you that air flows into the box from the ram intake. That dust and and dirt made it's way in with the rain / regular driving. It is meant to settle there (see the small drain hole) before the air is sucked up through the filter. So if you see dust on the TOP side of the air box... Then you would want to be concerned

Ditto! Thanks to this forum, I checked my AF today. Found cracks on 2 of 4 sides. Almost half way around the entire filter. Fortunately, the cracks did not extend through the entire gasket so none of the fines were found on the clean side of the housing. Gonna have a talk with my dealer.

Looks like Jeep needs to comp a whole bunch of filters but I bet they won't do that as that would make them liable for all manner of engine damage claims.

Checked mine, a whopping 4,000klms since the vehicle was new, cracked on all four sides,
What a PITA, and I'm hundreds of kilometres from the nearest dealer.

Do NOT use a K&N....they don't filter down small enough (larger microns!).
Great for racers and folks that like to increase intake noise but not so good for us regular guys.

Lot's of info on the Internet....

I am not aware of any other brands available, but I'm a long way from any parts suppliers at the moment anyway.
As I'm a long way from a dealer, including some unsealed (dirt) road, I think I'll try sealing it all the way round with silicone.
A fine smear and a 24 hour curing period before reinstalling should hopefully do the trick for now, I hope.

I'm not very keen on reinstalling a genuine filter at the moment anyway- it might just do the same thing.....

Popped mine off to check this. Still looks like new and no concerns. Novemeber build and 5600 miles. It just may be how these were installed as it is tight at the back where the tabs are on the cover. If not properly seated and then forced to get the tabs in, moving the top cover may get a hold of it and tear the lip on these. I noticed this when trying to get mine back in. Just my observation.

Dom, good catch!

Mine was cracked on two full sides, but only cracked completely through the rubber on one corner like shown in Roadkill's photo. (This is where I get to pat myself on the back.) I ordered a couple filters several months ago to have on hand in case of something like this. One down one to go. Maybe I can get the dealer to replace the cracked one. I call it a defect, not normal wear.

I checked ours last night and luckily all is good (for now), but I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on it now thanks to this forum. Also called the dealership on the vanity visor wiring recall. I am # 84 on their list waiting for parts to be released to complete the repair. No ETA on when parts will get released.

Mine is cracked as well. Called the dealership, Rothrock in Allentown. Their service department sucks. None in stock and they sounded as if they didn't believe me. They tried to tell me that "the filter is designed that way". I told the guy to stop talking to me like I'm stupid and that the filter is cracked around the edges. New one is in order.

I changed out my air filter a month ago when I reached 20,000 miles. The old one was in good shape, no cracks or anything, but was fairly dirty (as expected). I gained 1 mpg after putting the new one in.

I am going to check it more often, say every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Not because of the issue discussed here, but because it is getting dirty quicker than I expected.
