Chrysler Capital - Lease Sales Tax Rate

I leased my 2014 JGC Ltd 3.0 thru Chrysler Capital. Interestingly, the dealer's (Autonation) finance guy seemed very unfamiliar with leases...said they rarely did them at his store. (First time around, he got the excess mileage charge wrong...contract got kicked back from Chrysler Capital so had to come back to sign new lease contract.) now I'm seven months into my lease and see on the statement that they're charging me the sales tax rate on my lease at the wrong rate...about .35% higher than the rate for my city. So I called Chrysler Capital to get it fixed...but they'd have to research first. Told me to call back in a week.

Called back and they said "accounting says the tax rate engine for your zip code says that the rate is correct." Uh no...I've leased vehicles before, I know the tax rate for my city, and your tax rate engine is incorrect I told them.

Well you know where that went...nowhere with them.

So to be sure I wasn't crazy, I actually called my city's tax department and confirmed the actual tax rate on car leases. (I live in a great city...actually talked to a knowledgeable person who confirmed the rate.) So I called Chrysler Capital back and they told me to fax them the tax rate document from my city to they could send it to the proper department for review.

Although no action has been taken yet on their part to correct my rate, it's obvious they're charging the wrong rate to everyone in my zip code and likely for the entire city (has multiple zip codes).

So if you lease from Chrysler Capital, check your tax rate...make sure it's correct.

Re: Chrysler Capital - Lease Sales Tax Rate

No doubt Chrysler is in the wrong, keep in mind they are simply collecting the sales tax and sending it on to your city/state.
