Clearing CEL/MIL

Hello

I purchased an EcoDiesel GC i April and have found this forum to be quite informative and helpful. Thanks to all who participate.

Like many others here, I have gotten spurious CEL/MIL codes (usually P20EE) which often go away on their own, usually if the car isn't driven for 2 days. I did take the car to the dealer the first time, but they couldn't find any real problem but changed a NOX sensor; I still get codes once and a while. I have had all but the latest (10/17) software tweaks.

My problem is that while I can read the codes using Torque Free with a Vgate Scan OBD II bluetooth scanner, I can't clear the code. My assumption is that if the code is spurious, it won't come back after clearing, but if it is real, it will. I think that the error has to be detected on several (two?) consecutive starts to trigger the CEL/MIL.

On my previous car (a Saab), I could both read and clear codes with the same setup. Is there something that I'm missing here to be able to clear the codes in the Jeep?

CEL/MIL codes aside, I actually do love the car......

Re: Clearing CEL/MIL

Is the ignition in Run but motor off? It has to be in that state. That was my mistake at first. My Torque Pro app clears them every time...

This worked for me. Start engine and idle for at least 30 seconds. Drive at least 10 minutes at over 30mph. Let the vehicle idle for 30 seconds before turning it off. I believe this is referred to as the universal driving pattern. Each manufacturer can also have their own way to clear permanent codes, but all need to work with the universal pattern.

Some codes will clear on a drive cycle, others won't...at least not on mine. I let my CEL stay on for several days and 400 miles once. It never cleared.

If the code is emissions related and the underlying issue cleared up on its own (unlikely in the long run), it will clear after a few drive cycles.

You are right. This only works with Permanent codes after the active code is clear and there are no other issues.

Thanks! That did the trick. We'll see if the code comes back.
