Re: Cold start advise?

Thanks guys, but I don't think it's the battery since warming the engine with the block heater worked to start it. Like I said, it would start but then just die right after, so I would guess it's either fuel or maybe the oil. Will have to get some additive or try a different station on the next fill up. I need to take it in here in a couple weeks to have a scratch fixed from delivery so will have them look at everything then too.

Getting old diesel is what I fear the most. I would rather pay an extra .5-.10 cents a gallon knowing a have new diesel (winter blend) than get caught with a tank full of jelly

Personally I still think it is the battery, I live in this climate sometimes 6 month out of the year and it your battery doesn't have enough cold cranking amps it won't turn over the engine and not all batteries are perfect out of the box. I can have two batteries that will work fine a 0 but only one at -20. Doubt it is the oil, but could the fuel won't flow. Would fill up at a different station and see if that helps first. Good luck.

Re: Cold start advise?

-10 last night, and mine started fine with no additive. Having a tough time finding cetane levels in Minnesota, and the one who touts high cetane (fleet farm), I found out is only 42. I decided to fuel up at a Holiday station truck stop - at least they should have fresh fuel - but when asked, they do not know what is the cetane level.

Re: Cold start advise?

It's the fuel. Use additive until you can get to the dealer. Phone ahead to make sure they have fuel filters and get them changed. Only fuel up at high volume stations or truck stops.

That seems to be overkill on a truck with less than 1 tank run through it. While I can't say where the dealer filled it up, I stop at a station that does a modest diesel business so not sure it's dirty fuel as much as maybe not a good blend. It's only occurred once and doesn't seem to be an issue with everyone so I'll try a different station next time and keep an eye on it. Will also be picking up some additive just to be safe. Thanks all for the input and will keep you updated though it should be in the garage this week.

Law requires 40. Found an article awhile back with ballpark values...let me look again. Note: the article is old but te values should still be pretty close.

TADA: Cetane values

The problem, is I would like to fill at a station with 50. All the ones in my area per that list are 40-43.

I am in the same boat as you...only 40 around me. Once I get my tank down towards E I am going to use my additive and see what it does based on the initial tank.

However I think this may take awhile since I have put about 100 miles on the Jeep, the needle just moved off of full, and the range keeps climbing. I started at ~415 miles and now I am up to ~455

If you get decent cranking, it is rarely ever the battery.
Easy to test yourself, but any engine that fires and then dies is either using the wrong fuel or oil, or needs service.

Ours did the same thing at six degrees. Said low oil pressure. Started on the third The check engine lite has been on since then as well.

I have a Bluetooth OBD2 plug coming (crazy discounts at scan tool.net right now) and if I encounter this I will let everyone know what code it is.
