I checked the level of my oil the other day (I have 510 miles on the Jeep) and it was fine but surprised how black it was. I assume this is normal to be so black in a diesel? My oil life says I have 96% left. Anyone know why this low ash oil turns black so fast? Mike
It is not the oil, it is the nature of diesel engine. No matter what oil you will put in diesel engine it will turn black after the first start, but this does not mean that the oil goes bad, it will still protect the engine.
That's just Diesels. I had a Firestone tech tell me my VW TDI needed an oil change when I went in for an alignment once. I asked him how could he tell and he said it's really black. I said you know it's a TDI right, and he insisted that the oil was too black. I informed him that's the color of the new oil 30 seconds after starting it, I don't think he believed me.
