Coolant reservoir black in 2016

I just checked my coolant reservoir is all black. I don't seem to remember if it was black. The engine is still hot, but later I will go and open it to see what happened there. Any ideas? I have about 3800 miles.

So you can't see oil in the coolant?

I don't remember if the top half reservoir was black or all white. I opened and don't see any sludge, but the coolant does look like rusty in color. I seem to think it was purple when new.

Looks ok to me. Sure looks better than what's in my 2012 Wrangler.

The color might be different looking due to the surrounding material.

What color is the coolant if you turkey baste a small amount out and put on a paper towel?

Should have mentioned in my second post. I dipped a gun cleaning patch and it came out pink/purple in color.

That is not OK. That is a tell tale sign of oil in your coolant. That reservoir should be transparent. Your oil cooler has for sure failed and coolant is seeping into your oil and vice versa. You should take that to your dealer ASAP. It's covered under the power train warranty.

Mine is a '15, but the tank is white/transparent. By your pic, it looks like they changed the plastic to black. If oil is in there, it would be on the top (oil floats) and a brownish color.. My fluid is pink in color, so I would have a dealer look at it also.

I haven't heard of a single tank being black. I've checked out 16s and 17s and they are both transparent. If it's black like that than the oil is in the coolant.

Oh yea, pull the dip stick and what do you see?

It does appear the plastic is black, look at the support fins.

Oil looks fine and is almost at the max level.

On the coolant reservoir, I didn't see any sludge or oil floating in it as it shows in the second pic.

Can anyone in with 2016 diesel confirm if the coolant reservoir is half black from the top?

Re: Coolant reservoir black in 2016

that tank is DEF BLACK from factory on top.

thats not a STAIN.

regarding your cooloant, its known that it makes a bit of sludge aroung the filler.
Been doing that since 2006 when they went to the Hoat or Oat or whatever coolant is spec.

other thing to watch out for is mixing in GREEN coolant in with yours.
most places besides the dealer default to GREEN you dont want green anywhere near yours at it will really sludge up; I know of two NON JEEP that have had major issues due to coolant solidifiying.

The sludge isn't casting sand?
