Cooling fan mystery

At what temperature should the cooling fan come on? I tow a caravan, and in two years have not heard this happen. The car heats up and still no fan noise. I recently had the 49 recall done, and have heard the fan twice. Why is this so? Is there a way of adjusting the fan, to ensure it comes on, and comes on early-ish?

It's part of the ECM programming. The GDE tune has the fan come on earlier and will run even after shutting down the engine. It's conceivable FCA changed the fan to come on more with recent versions of the stock tune.

From talking to my Jeep Dealership there is a problem with the recall.

I noticed the cooling fan issue immediately. Drove home and pulled into the garage and the vehicle sounded like a jet engine. Vehicle has done it a few times since. (freaks the kids out when I drop them at school!)

I've had it back to the dealership and they were aware of the issue but had no solution. Also I've noticed the Fuel economy has dropped by about 2L/100km. Which I've also advised about. I was getting between 7.6 and 8.3 L/100 since new. (I have about 26,000km on th clock). Now getting around 10.3 to 10.9 L/100km. My previous model did better than that.

Can't say I'm thrilled with this. The auto gear shifting is also different (particulalry 2-3rd) and I'm noticing a particular "hesitation" when accelerating hard from a stop or low speed.

I've reported all this to the dealership and apparently they have other similar complaints. They're waiting for Jeep to come back with an answer.

It's the transmission update for the electronic shifter that prevents you getting out of the car while it is in any gear other than Park. The Anton Yelchin tragic death was what got FCA to introduce the S49 Safety Recall. It appears the software change in Australia also incorporated a few other updates that are now causing concern for owners. The fans run at max speed for what seems no reason and the EVIC now displays more messages on DBF burns.
The old story with computer coding :-
"If a debugger removes bugs from program code. What does a programmer do ?"

It looks like FCA thought while they were doing the S49 update that they were forced into. They would also correct some minor issues they were already aware of but were not wanting to incur the cost of expensive recalls.

Anyone know what else was in the S49 update?

I had a new trans put in my MY15 diesel GC early Sept and started to get the max thermo fan issue after that. Got the recall for the 'park' issue late Sept and had it done early Oct.

It's going back in for yet another look at the trans (poor shifting) tomorrow, I'll ask if there's a fix for the fan roar yet.

FCA releases these updates as a roll-up, not in a modular fashion. So, even if this update release version only included the "shifter of doom" changes, it also implicitly included all the releases that came before. Does that make sense? They aren't just flashing some changes to a shifter control function module, but rather they are installing the latest version of the firmware for these modules. You can get a sense of what would be changed by applying the recall by going to WK2jeeps.com and looking at the TSBs/RRTs for your model year and by determining what release version to which your modules were previously flashed. (No, there's no version readout you can see, you're going to have to estimate what versions you have based on dealer invoices and/or dates when your modules were last flashed)

The recall flashed multiple modules (ECM, BCM, TCM, and the cluster). Given the software level I was at before the updates were applied, my 2014 got a fix for a "stuck pixel"-appearing graphical flaw on EVIC, the fix that allowed the cargo hatch to open with two clicks of the fob instead of four, and the latest TCM shift pattern updates—all thanks to the S24 flash process.

Oh yeah, and the "shifter of doom" fix was applied too, I guess. Heh.

Spoke to the chief mechanic at the dealer, and he believes the updated applied Russian temp control settings to Aussie GC's, the fix was due end of Nov, but is delayed until sometime in Dec, apparently it take around 2.5 hours to apply as it updates all manner of settings.

Thanks for this info, had a service about 6 weeks ago and have the same problem, fan comes on 2-3 times a day. Yesterday, approx. 4 mins after starting off, ran for about 6-7 mins, went off for a couple, the stayed on for about 10. before the last service never heard the fan, even when towing large boat. Exhaust regen has come on at least 3 times. Fuel consumption up 2-3 l/100 km, at the moment in the 12's, yesterday into the 14,s and I'm taking it easy. Not happy Jan.

Roadkill, I'm little confused. I thought the as you call it "shifter of doom" was S-27. No idea what S-24 was or S-49 Kiss was talking about. Can you clarify for me please. By the way I have not got that update and don't plan to. I just wish they would put a 2016 shifter in mine. But really the one I have works just fine. Just have to pay attention that the display and the shifter go to park. Mike

Yeah confusing. The initial recall in the US for gas models was S27. In Australia this recall was registered with the govt as S27, but didn't have a fix, just a letter telling people to make sure they put it in park and apply the park brake.

Then later the diesel and export models got their software fix, it was called S49, the 300C was S50.

I found this thread following an internet search. We had our 2014 GC Diesel in for the s49 recall in November and have had the fan issue on every drive since.

The fan runs flat out, non-stop and is so loud you can hear the car coming from 100 metres away. We've never had the issue before.

I'm waiting to hear back from the servicing dealership. Has anyone had the issue successfully resolved yet?

Phil I'm in your camp. No way I'm doing it. Mine works fine. The only thing I will do is if FCA retrofits the 2016 gear shift into the 2014-2015's. It is a mechanical issue that needs to be solved and not with a bandaid software fix. Part of our routine always put on emergency brake when we put it in park and also look at the lever and the display and see that it goes into park. You actually can feel it in the lever. Agree with the careless comment, need to pay attention to what you are doing.

The software patch for the fan issue related to the S49 update was issued to dealers on 3/1/17.

Yep correct!
For some people the fan problem has been extremely irritating, for others, they've noticed nothing. Go figure.

And I'm hearing however that the problem is NOT fixed, with the new update, at least for one person.:slapfight:

So glad my car hasn't been near a Jeep dealer for quite some time... :)

As I've said before, I have no issues with my shifter, yes, I do check it's in Park properly and I do apply the foot park brake before exiting the vehicle.
Just as I have done with every other vehicle I've owned :D (except the others had a HAND brake.)

I guess I can't avoid getting it done forever, but no plans to get it done any time soon.

Cya
