Re: DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

I think I should modify my previous post - when Dom picks a design that he's happy with, he should build it. If too many of "us" add our input to the design; change here, tweak there...it will become a hassle for both Dom and us. Honestly, I just want something that works, and the sooner the better. If after the 1st build he makes a design change/improvement, then future buyers can purchase the A1 or A2 version.

DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

Was gonna say id like to make everyone happy but i know i cant and never will. So, i will design it to best of our skills and experience in the off road industry. Which i have a lot in with real world dirt miles testing various suspension ideas and parts with success.

If some of u guys would like to get to know me a little. Look at the dieselpowermagazine for may2013 issue. U can find it on there site. My cummins is on front cover as well as 5 page spread.

If u guys want to come for a ride in it just let me know . I do at least 500-1000 miles of dirt every month in death valley , mojave and or baja.

Or look me up under killawhale42 on insta gram

If its not well thought out and done right, it could cause more issues than it solves. Heat is the biggest concern I have. There is a reason Jeep didn't cover the injector or mount it further around the pipe to protect it. That reason may be partially financial but I suspect heat was a concern.

I'd prefer to see and approve the design before committing. Limp mode from cooking my DEF injector sounds like a hassle.

Re: DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

I was eluding to the fact that "our" mad scientist is a skilled designer - I did a background on him, and his past works of art have been proven(magazine spread). I'm more apt to trust his design judgment. That being said - each of us have distinct driving locals/climates/areas and what may work in the desert may not be the best for Colorado or the frozen tundra etc.

The heat concern is a issue to be considered nonetheless. Would love to temp probe the DEF filter when it's in regen to see what the actual temps of the pipe are. There's a reason regen is done at highway speeds - airflow is needed to help cool the pipe. Adding a skid plate may trap the heat, and one could speculate that the high temps is causing premature failure of the injector.

Re: DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

I suspect at some point, everyone's GC Diesel has been parked or idled during a regen event since we have no built in way to know when it occurs. I have personally seen mine hold 1100F at the CAT (downstream from the DPF) for 2 minutes while I idled in a parking lot. It took another 2 minutes to go back to 450F. If anyone has access to an infrared temperature gun, I'd love to know what the reading is at the square flange just after the DPF and before the Y pipe with DPF injector mount.

That being said, I think slanted vents ( louvers) with 50% open area might allow enough airflow and still offer good protection.

I'm sure our designer is skilled! I design automated industrial machinery. Others on here may be engineers as well. I'm sure on the front end, all ideas are welcome.

Re: DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

Great idea, hopefully something functional and sturdy comes of this. Very glad I found this thread via a different forum discussion. I'm in, will likely buy if the final product makes sense and doesn't seem to compromise the existing injection system.

DEF INJECTOR and Harness protection group buy

Ok, so far im still kind of liking the original design. This is a little more well thought out though.

The wing that is bent up with the hole in it is for the frame side hole. We will have to use some type of toggle bolt with washers to make that side work. Ill try and locate some heavier duty version other than what home cheapo sells. The other flap with no hole is going to b a shield to help keep the heat from the dpf to a minimum(so basically it sits between the injector and dpf).

The vents are now going to be slightly bent to allow more air flow. But are only towards the front of the shield so that in the event that u do hit water or what ever it will somewhat splash or go up away from injector which is at back of the plate where there are no vents.

Another thing id like to bring up is that this plate is aluminum so it dissipates heat very quickly. I've tested the original prototype version today here in socal where it is triple digits and the injector area is just as hot with or with out the shield/plate(Infrared approved lol).
